I don’t think there’s any point in comparing Kaylee and Murphy’s achievements. They’re both great.
Kaylee did incredible… but the majority of the world can’t win CGs. Nonetheless, all she needs is the 200 back LCM WR to hold the “boxed set” (or whatever you want to call it) of OG, LCW, SCW, LCM WR and SCM WR.
Murphy’s achievement is also great but comes with multiple asterisks of the 50 back debacle and the best backstrokers in the world currently being banned (one of whom did nothing wrong, one of whom deserves it). Cooper swam faster than Murphy’s PB 2 races in a row. I believe that a re-swim was the only real solution, but that doesn’t make it… Read more »
Sports are rigged. There was a FanDuel boost at +500 for Murphy to take silver, and the books stood to lose a lot of money if it hit.
This was exciting and all, but where is the coverage of the insanity from winter juniors?
Y’all should let Retta have a run editing the SwimSwim magazine, I’m imagining it just turning into “Tiger Beat” but for all the Hott New Male International Swimming Teens!!! (Ofc she picked the 200 free as race of the meet! It had Hwang and Popovici in it! Just toss in some Liendo somewhere and it’s the trifecta of faves.)
Also Coleman saying Cooper “won” the first heat of the 50 back – false! That was not a race! False! That dude really did himself no favors by immediately jumping on the “I’m not doing that again!!” train. Not the right headspace to put oneself in.
That 50 backstroke is the most asinine topic since I’ve sampled swimming forums. Headspace indeed. It’s like jumping aboard the peer pressure bandwagon. We heard the horn. We saw several swimmers stop immediately. From that point, how can anyone care one percent? Let’s say Murphy and Cooper had stopped but two lesser swimmers in outside lanes completed the distance and one out touched the other, in the exact times attributed to Cooper and Murphy. Are we really going to declare that guy the winner, with the two principals stationary?
I’ve seen this situation numerous times in track races, primarily at 400 and 400 hurdles. They start on the curve, not far from loud spectators. The starts are staggered so much… Read more »
You say “no one should care about it” but you post about it daily. Seems like you care about it a lot.
He has a pathological loathing of Aussie swimmers. But at least it keeps him off the streets.
I bet you’d say exactly the same thing. As would anyone in that moment
I mean, maybe? But he also said he heard the extra buzz, the thing that generally means, “stop.”
Ryan Murphy said that Cooper won the race too. His exact words. Not sure why you’re having such a tantrum about vernacular.
FINA World Aquatics Championships (LCM)
Women’s 800 meter freestyle
Katie Ledecky (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023)
And she could add another one before the Olympics in 24.
Did something happen at the end of this? Coleman was literally mid-statement when it ended. Would still love to hear discussion of juniors at some point, maybe after the new year if y’all have time.
Men’s 50 back call:
Agree that there is no perfect solution and a re-swim is the best option, but could have put the re-swim at the end of the session to give them more time to rest. 45 minutes are a little tight.
Better comback:
Chad.
Seto has been consistently good in the past years. The Tokyo Olympics was kind of a one-time miss for him. And we expected him to do well in the short course season. I don’t think anyone expected such fast times from Chad months ago.
Chad-Lochte SC titles tie:
Basically agree with what you guys said, but I want to mention that it’s a home world championships for Milak and he… Read more »
I think the officials did the best thing possible in redoing the 50 back. If they went with best times and Ryan Murphy won silver, then who would have won male Swimmer of the meet ? Murphy or Fink? Fink’s only silver was still an AR and he was awesome on all medley relays!
I think the most impressive think about Seto’s 6 peat was that it was done in the 4IM. Most athletes try to swim shorter events as they age, but Seto even though he does have other options.
It seems like Braden flip flops on how swimmers should train….today he says people going 7-9k per workout are seeing their success. Before it was less is more! The best club coaches in the country right now are 7-9k school (as I am). I do think there are more than one way to skin a cat. But we shouldn’t say there is only one way.
That’s generally what people do when they don’t know what they’re talking about, so it checks out.
Race of the meet:
Women’s 100m fly.
I actually expect Maggie to break that world record last year, anyway glad that she did it this year and with such a big margin. Torri Huske and Louise Hansson also swam pretty fast (both sub55).
Better comeback:
Chad. Honestly didn’t expect him to get a PB at this stage of his career.
Chad tie or break Lochte’s record:
Sink it. He might tie but I don’t see him break it.
McKeown or Murphy:
Murphy slightly over McKeown.
6-peat:
It’s surprising that you guys didn’t mention Ledecky until last minute.
Sjostrom might achieve 6-peat as well in 50m fly but she needs to win next year… Read more »
I was surprised they forgot about Ledecky who’s about to makes history next year and could go to win her fourth gold in the events at Paris.
