Last weekend, Division 2 schools from across the state converged in Sulphur, Louisiana to compete at the state championship meet. On the girls’ side of the meet, St. Scholastica continued its historic run, picking up the school’s 12th straight title with ease. The boy’s meet was much closer, with Holy Cross winning by just 20.5 points.
Girls Meet Recap
St. Thomas came out strong to start the meet, powering to a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Claire Boudreaux, Marie Landreneau, Emma Alexander, and Addison Romero won the event by over four seconds, touching in 1:53.85.
Landreneau added two more victories on her way to being named the Division 2 swimmer of the meet.
In her first individual event of the day, the 200 free, she took the gold by over five seconds, touching in 1:49.02. That swim makes her the fastest girl in Division 2 history by over four seconds, with the previous record having been set at 1:53.74 in 2018 (she also went 1:53.16 in the prelims).
Landreneau followed that performance up with a win in the 100 breast later in the meet, touching in 1:04.49 to again clear the field by over five seconds. Last season, Landreneau was also a two-event winner, opting to contest the 200 IM and 100 free. She set meet records in both of those events. Only a junior, she’s committed to join the University of Alabama in 2024.
Joining Landreneau as a double event winner was Sadie Huenefeld, a sophomore from Ruston. Huenefeld also started her meet off in record-setting fashion, taking two-tenths off the Division 2 record in the 50 free to finish in a time of 23.76. She also added a win in the 100 free, touching over two seconds ahead of the field in a time of 52.26.
St. Scholastica claimed not one, but two Division 2 relay records, setting both the 200 and 400 free relay records. In the 200 free relay, Gabby Hall, Hadley Mary, Emma Mae Smith, and Andrea Cuccia took two-tenths off of the previous record, touching in 1:40.21. It was the same four again in the 400 free relay, with the team taking two seconds off of the old record in 3:39.01.
Other Event Winners
- Hannah Waddell took the top spot in the 200 IM, touching at 2:17.04. She also finished as the runner-up to Landreneau in the 100 breast (1:09.64).
- Gabby Hall added an individual win on the day as well, grabbing the 100 fly in 58.68.
- Freshman Maya Trutschl of Caddo Magnet was the only swimmer to finish under 1:00 in the 100 back, winning in 59.87.

Boys Meet Recap
Picking up a pair of event wins on his way to earning swimmer of the meet honors, Avery Henke started his day by setting a Division 2 record in the 200 IM. The Teurlings Catholic senior won the event by over eight seconds, leading from start to finish on his way to a time of 1:49.90. He added a second Division 2 record later in the meet in the 100 breast, finishing in 55.36 to lower the record by almost a full second.
Henke is committed to join Auburn University next fall. He was named to SwimSwam’s Way Too Early list of recruits in the 2023 class.
Henke also helped his school, Teurlings Catholic, to a pair of wins in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The 200 free relay was a tight race, with just half a second separating the top three teams. Teurlings’ team of Henke (20.99), Ethan Phipps, Slade Cart, and Max Petitfils came out on top, touching in 1:32.13. Holy Cross (1:32.64) and Lakeshore (1:32.73) were just being them for second and third. The same four swimmers came together for Tuerlings’ 400 free relay, finishing first in 3:21.60 with Henke anchoring in 45.22.
Calix Hammett joined Henke as a double event winner, sweeping the sprint freestyle events. The junior picked up the win in the 50 free in 20.97 before adding a second win in the 100 free (46.30).
Repeating as the Division 2 champion in the 100 back, sophomore Josiah Dang won the event by nearly three seconds. Dang touched in a time of 51.87, well ahead of Robert Campbell’s 54.80. Dang was also the runner-up in the 50 free, finishing in 21.10 for silver.
Other Event Winners
- Haynes Academy picked up the win in the 200 medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:42.72.
- Lee Tao, a senior from Benjamin Franklin, claimed first in the 200 free in 1:44.72.
- Boyd Pugh of The Willow School came out on top i the 100 fly, touching in 52.26.
