KINGSTON, RI – The Catamounts continued their dominance with another surge in day three of the Harold Anderson Invitational, claiming five first place victories, two Tootell Aquatic Center records, one first year record and one UVM varsity record. Vermont finished with a score of 853 with Rhode Island (756) and Holy Cross (636) rounding out the top-three. Binghamton finished in fourth with a score of 497.5 and Maine placed fifth with 382 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Vermont continued their dominance at the Harold Anderson Invitational winning the first event, the 1650 free. Ella Church cruised to the victory in a time of 17:20.35.
  • The Catamounts placed well in a tightly contested 100 freestyle with Jackie House taking first in a time of 51.88, while Mina Poppas placed third in 51.98.
  • First year Natalie Schlemmer commanded her best performance of her young career winning the 200 breast in a time of 2:17.09. That time set a Tootell Aquatic Center record, beating her time from the day before by a full two and a half seconds. Her time was also a Vermont first year record and UVM varsity record.
  • Hally Laney carried on with her 2022-23 success claiming another Tootell Aquatic Center record in the 200 fly. Laney finished in first with a time of 2:03.54 a full three seconds ahead of the entire field.
  • First year Miranda Schuman finished in fifth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.54.
  • UVM was able to complete their sweep of the relays taking home the final event of the Harold Anderson Invitational, the 400 freestyle, in dominating fashion. The combination of Jackie House, Autumn Bullinger, Cailin Campbell and Mina Poppas cruised to first place in a time of 3:29.23.
  • UVM finished outright first in the Harold Anderson Invitational for the first-time ever recording 15 first place finishes, eight Tootell Aquatic Center records, three first year records and two UVM varsity records over the three-day event.
  • This was the first time since 2007 that Rhode Island did not win or tie for first in the Harold Anderson Invitational.

WHO’S NEXT 
Following this weekend’s Harold Anderson Invitational, the Catamounts will travel to Amherst, Massachusetts for a dual meet with UMass and Binghamton on Saturday, December 3. The meet is scheduled to start with the diving events at 11 a.m. and will conclude with swimming starting at 1 p.m.

FINAL 2022-23 HOMECOMING
Vermont’s final meet of the season at Forbush Natatorium will come on Saturday, January 21 against Rhode Island. The meet will be the Catamounts Senior Day Presented by The Alumni Association. The meet is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. and will be streamed live on AmericaEast.TV.

KINGSTON, R.I. – For the second consecutive year, the Binghamton men’s swimming & diving team has captured the mid-season Rhode Island Invitational. The Bearcat men’s squad placed first out of five teams while the women were fourth out of seven competing programs. The three-day event concluded on Sunday afternoon.

Binghamton won 13 of the men’s individual events and swept all five relays. In the process, the Bearcats set nine pool records.

Junior Liam Murphy and sophomore Elijah Lanfear each won three individual events. Murphy swept the 200 free (1:38.55), the 500 free (4:28, 12 -pool record) and the 1,650 free (15:40.82 -pool record). Lanfear, meanwhile, captured the 50 free (20.28), the 100 free (45.31) and the 100 fly (47.42 – pool record).

Three other Bearcat men won a pair of individual events. They included senior Ryan Cohn in the one-meter diving (293.70) and three-meter diving (304.70 – pool record), junior Henry Shemet in the 200 IM (1:48.26 – pool record) and the 400 IM (3:53.91 -pool record) and fellow junior Eric Kroon in the 100 breast (55.55) and the 200 breast (1:50.11).

Binghamton’s other men’s individual winner was junior Jake Vecchio in the 200 fly (1:50.11).

Lanfear and Shemet swam on the same four first-place relays (200 free, 400 free, 200 medley and 400 medley). Murphy was on a pair of relays (400 free and 800 free) as was Vecchio (400 medley and 800 free). Kroon was part of the 400 medley relay.

Seniors Justin Meyn was on three first-place relays (200 free, 400 free, 800 free) and fellow senior Ryan Maierle was on the 200 free relay. Also swimming on the 800 free relay were junior George Kipshidze and freshman Liam Preston.

Three of the winning men’s relays clocked pool-record times – the 200 free (1:20.48), the 400 medley (3:18.61) and the 200 medley (1:29.14). The other first-place times were 6:42.70 in the 800 free relay and 3:00.65 in the 400 free relay.

On the women’s side, meanwhile, the Bearcats leading scorer was freshman Celia Webster. She placed second in the both the 200 IM (2:07.69) and the 200 back (2:03.16). Webster was also third in the 100 fly (56.65).

Junior Courtney Moane was second in the 100 breast (1:04.93) and third in the 200 breast (2:21.56). She was also fifth in the 200 IM (2:08.73).

Sophomore Lauren Kuzma was second in the 200 breast (2:21.39) while junior Maddie Hoover was fourth in both the 100 free (53.09) and the 500 free (5:03.57).

Hoover and Webster each swam on the runner-up 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay teams that clocked times of 1:45.87 and 3:49.74 respectively. They were also part of the third-place 800 free relay team (7:41.87).

Moane, meanwhile, was on both medley relay teams and fellow junior Molly Greeley was on the 200 medley relay team as well as the 800 free relay team.

Freshman Maria Pignatelli was on 400 free relay team while junior Marley Zimmerman was part of the 800 free relay.

Binghamton closes out the fall semester with a meet at UMass on Saturday Dec. 3. The Vermont women’s team will also take part in that competition.
