Evgenii Somov Joins Albiero With Rare ACC Five-Peat In Men’s 100 Breast

2022 ACC SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Winning four straight conference championship titles is a rare feat in college swimming, but five is essentially unheard of—until this year.

Louisville fifth-year seniors Evgenii Somov and Nicolas Albiero came into the 2022 ACC Championships with a chance to become the conference’s first-ever five-time champions after swimmers who competed in the 2020-21 season were granted an extra year of eligibility due to the NCAA cancelation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

First up was Albiero, who got the job done in a big way in the men’s 200 fly, becoming the second-fastest performer in history with a winning time of 1:37.92.

Somov followed up by joining his teammate with five event wins in a row, blasting his way to a time of 51.13 to take down a competitive field that saw three other men clock 51.77 or better.

Somov’s time was one tenth off his Conference and ACC Championship Record of 51.03 set in 2021.

Somov 100 breast titles:

  • 2018, freshman – 52.18
  • 2019, sophomore – 51.90
  • 2020, junior – 51.85
  • 2021, senior – 51.03
  • 2022, fifth-year – 51.13

The Russian native now ranks fourth in the NCAA this season, trailing Minnesota’s Max McHugh (50.58), Alabama’s Derek Maas (50.78) and Texas’ Caspar Corbeau (50.79).

Somov’s highest NCAA finish in the 100 breast is fourth, done last season, while he placed seventh in both 2018 and 2019.
