We sat down with new USC head coach Jeremy Kipp to talk Southern Cal past, present, and future. Kipp told us what he’s excited to come back to at USC after having been the head coach for Boise State and Northwestern, including (if you can believe it) the traffic. He also reminisced on some of the distance practices he coached at during his first stint with the trojans, with famed Olympians like Ous Mellouli and Larsen Jensen.

When I was working at SwimSwam HQ (before quarantine), every day when I took a lunch break, Mel’s response was: “Lunch? Lunch is for wimps”
The other classic line from Glegarry Glen Ross from Alec Baldwin is “Coffee is for closers”.

Good to see Kipp reflecting back on what were some epic workouts that translated into great performances of Trojan distance swimmers in the past. Now he needs to use that as a starting point or benchmark on what has to happen going forward with the USC distance program. In recent years the Trojan distance program has fallen on leaner times. I think that’s more an issue with recruiting rather than development.
I assume since USC doesn’t have a specifically-designated distance coach specialist that Kipp and Maurer would take over that function. Anyone recall the quality of Stanford’s distance program (pre-Ledecky days) when Maurer was HC for the Stanford Women?
