Oviedo High School’s Ryan Gibbons has committed to swim at Emory University beginning in the fall of 2020. Gibbons shared his excitement with a post on his Twitter page:

The Florida-native swims on club team Blue Dolfins. In December, he qualified to swim at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals – East. There, he raced in the 200 free, 200 and 400 IM, and the 200 free relay. He took home 2 personal best times, going a 4:00.68 in the 400 IM, and split a 21.44 as the lead-off leg of the 200 free relay.
In August, he competed in the 400 free and the 200 and 400 IM at the Futures Championship meet in Greensboro. He placed 63rd in the 400 free (4:15.44), 30th in the 200 IM (2:12.53), and he was seeded 7th heading into finals for the 200 IM. Gibbons moved up a spot, finishing 6th with a time of 4:36.07. He led off Blue Dolfins’ 800 free relay that finished 9th, clocking in at 1:57.17. Gibbons ended the meet with 4 personal best times, one for each race.
In November, Gibbons participated in his final high school swim meet. He swam the 200 IM and 500 free and 2 relays at the Florida High School 4A State Championship. The Oviedo High School senior earned the bronze medal in the 200 IM, going a 1:51.72 behind Alexander Gusev and Liam Custer, both swimmers at Riverview High School in Sarasota. Gibbons later moved up from 8th to 6th place in the 500 freestyle. He was 0.4 seconds behind Creekside High School’s Aidan Henry at the 450 yard mark, out-touching him at the end to finish 6th. Gibbons made a quick turnaround, taking part in Oviedo’s 200 free relay. He swam the third leg, splitting a 21.33, and the boys took home the bronze medal. In his final race, he swam the 3rd leg of the 400 free relay, going a 48.57. The Oviedo men took home the first place trophy at the end of the meet.

In the fall, Gibbons will be joining Emory University, as they aim to win their 23rd straight University Athletic Association conference title. His best times would have clinched him a spot in the A-final of the 500 free, and in the B-final of the 200 and 400 IM. Gibbons will be Emory’s 6th fastest 200 IMer, with 0.9 seconds separating him from William Schuler, who currently ranks as their fastest. He will join sprinter Jake Meyer and breaststroke specialist William Kerscher in the fall of 2020.
