Beyond the Pancakes: How Queens University Won Mens/Women’s Titles in 5 Years

In Practice + Pancakes, SwimSwam takes you across the country and through a practice day in the life of swimming’s best athletes. It breaks down training sessions, sub sets, and what every team is doing to be at their best. But why are they doing things that way? In Beyond the Pancakes, we dive inside the minds of coaches and athletes, getting a first hand look at why they do the things they do, and where their minds are pointed on the compass of evolution as a swimmer.

When SwimSwam went to visit Queens University, we sat down with head coach Jeff Dugdale to speak with him about Queens’ success since his arrival in 2011. Dugdale breaks down numerous factors to Queen’s success, including their “ultimate” pool (an indoor pool with the breathibility of an outdoor pool), Queen’s lack of a football team letting Olympic sports take higher priority, and the support of their athletic department in chasing Olympic dreams over NCAA success.

I wish Drury University’s athletic department would support their swim teams like Queens does. Locker rooms are pathetic and meals before a meet are a loaf of bread and some deli meat. Disappointing that they do not get the support from the school that they deserve after winning so many National Championships.

They’ve had a lot of great assistants over the years as they were building this

It’s gotta take some good program people to help build something like this.

I remember comments people made about David coaching the Queens college kids and that’s why they got better but I don’t know if I believe that anymore. He said he had a hard time balancing Team Elite and the college guys at UCSD. If it was just copy past from the time at Queens then it should have been easier for him considering the power of athletes leading up to 2020 is not nearly what it was leading to 2016. Jeff, you are a class act for responding this way! Like I said, lots of love for you no matter the ums and they sure don’t get in the way of your coaching. Best of luck always!
