Marchand, McIntosh Highlight Bowman Pro Group Fly Set | PRACTICE + PANCAKES

It’s not every day you walk onto a pool deck and are surrounded by Olympians. Unless you’re Bob Bowman.

Coming off an altitude camp in November and competing at the US Open in early December, Bob Bowman’s pro group at Texas was ramping back up their yardage on this Tuesday afternoon when SwimSwam dropped in. Wanting to get in a bit of aerobic and anaerobic work, Bowman ran a set that he got from Aussie coach Bill Sweetenham that involved a lot of fast 50s fly.

The group of pros doing this set was as follows:

Leon Marchand, Summer McIntosh, Hubert Kos, Regan Smith, Carson Foster, Shaine Casas, Luke Hobson, Chris Guiliano, Lindsay Looney, and Jack Kelly.

See the main set below:

3 Rounds (Round 2 50’s on :45, Round 3 50’s on :50)

ALL 50’s are FAST & Fly

  • 200 @ 2:40
  • 150 @ 1:50
  • 50 @ :40
  • 150 @ 1:45
  • 100 @ 1:05
  • 2×50 @ :40
  • 100 @ 1:00
  • 3×50 @ :40

Just watched this today. Wow, Leon Marchand, that was impressive. Has he confirmed whether he will be swimming the 200 fly at Europeans? I’m so curious to see if he can beat his Olympics time.

No but depending on which other events he will do (400, 200 free?), he could drop one of his 200’s.
Bob urged him to race it at US Open, so it might be that one.

The 100 recovery on 1:00 is insane, especially when Leon cruises a 52.

  1. I hate training fly with someone else in my lane, but here I see it’s actually a useful way to force you to stay underwater.
  2. That pool looks tiny, there is so much wash.
  3. When the spring semester starts, does Hubi have to move out of the pro group?
  4. Started reading the set and thought “I could do that”, then realized the 100 was on 1:00. Nevermind!
  5. Is it normal for non-flyers to do fly sets?

Fly sets for non-flyers are great. You either greatly improve transferable strength and power by suffering on top of the water or you get better at underwaters. Choice is yours!

The pool is really neat for the space it was built in. It’s kind of P shaped. If you’re doing long course, it only five lanes, but you also have five lanes of short course at the same time. And if you are only set up for short course, as it is in this video, you have a 10 lane pool and a five lane pool. They are in the five lane section. It gives you lots of options for training without resetting the indoor pool multiple times a day.

Funny to see that Summer wasn’t too far behind Hobson 😉 She’s so fast lol

I found it interesting that Bob didn’t critique anyone’s stroke. I don’t recall any feedback on technique.

Are some sets just about pushing the swimmers physically? And keep stroke mechanic work for other sets.

There isn’t much time for critique when you’re on the wall for 5 seconds.

Bob’s honestly not much of a technique guy. He leaves that to other coaches. He’s more of a mental prep + overarching training strategy guy.

Just incredible!

Interesting that Bob did this same set 2 years ago exactly with ASU. I think he has a pretty fixed training plan.

Nobody is looking across to see how they fared, especially Leon touching first every time. I guess he knows.

This set would be exponentially more interesting with Le Clos out there.

Summer looking very physically strong in back and shoulders. Late video had the one bad rep then rebounded immediately.
