The MSHSAA Boys Class 2 State Championships saw a thrilling battle as the boys of St. Louis University High (St. Louis) were seeking to defend their 2018 state title. Thanks to the efforts of St. Louis’ three divers, the team was able to distance themselves throughout the meet and successfully defended their team title.

This is the third season where the state meet was broken up into two classes based on school size.

Meet Highlights:

St. Louis’ Sebastian Lawrence was the 1-meter diving semifinals leader by 12 points over Logan Schelfaut (Francis Howell North). During the finals, Schelfaut was progressively catching up to Lawrence for the diving title. At the conclusion of diving, Schelfaut defeated Lawrence by 2.2 points with his total score of 499.7 points.

Lawrence’s second-place finish, along with finals’ efforts from teammates Gabe Manalang (5th) and Maximilian Manalang (7th), earned St. Louis 43 points heading into the swimming finals.

The lone St. Louis event win in the pool went to sophomore Cooper Scharff, who won the 100 back at 51.10 by one one-hundredth over Hickman senior Kyle Holzum.

The boys of Lee’s Summit North dominated in the pool, picking up six total event victories. Headlining for the team was Daniel Worth, who broke the 200 IM class 2 record (1:49.39) and 100 breast Missouri state record (53.53). The original 100 breast record was owned by USA Swimming Deck Pass Live host Jeff Commings, which was set in 1992 at 54.78.

Worth (21.29) then joined teammates Clayton Adkins (22.23), Andrew Bennett (20.52), and Lance Godard (20.52) to not only win the 200 free relay but break the state record with a 1:24.56, just edging out St. Louis by 0.29s.

Before the 200 free relay, Bennett (21.01) and Godard (21.25) swam a Lee’s Summit North 1-2 finish in the 50 free. Godard also won the 100 fly with a 50.14. Earlier in the meet, Alder Harding (26.76), Worth (24.20), Godard (22.81), and Bennett (20.84) won the 200 medley relay with a 1:34.61.

Despite the massive success in the pool, Lee’s Summit North only managed to finish 4th in the team standings. Breaking down the top 4 team’s scores, what crushed the team were four events that saw zero point contributions, including the 1-meter diving event. While they had two relay wins, their 400 free relay only managed a 10th-place finish.

For the St. Louis boys, their depth capability of scoring swimmers in every single event is what contributed to their second-straight state championship title.
