No. 20 UCLA travelled to No. 3 Stanford on Friday in a PAC-12 dual meet weekend. Stanford defeated UCLA 163-128, winning 14 of 16 events while exhibitioning non-winners after the 50 free.
Meet Highlights
The 200 medley relay kicked off the meet in thrilling fashion. Taylor Ruck gave Stanford a narrow lead off of the backstroke with a 25.03, UCLA’s Emma Schanz was right behind in a 25.21. Claire Grover made a 0.12 second lead for UCLA with a 27.92 breast split while Lucie Nordmann gave Stanford a 0.06 second lead with her 24.14 fly split. Into the freestyle leg, Stanford’s Ashley Volpenhein (22.64) held off UCLA’s Amy Okada (22.62) to defeat UCLA 1:39.93 to 1:39.97.
The Stanford B-relay got disqualified on the last exchange but would have won with a 1:39.80. Their relay was powered by Ella Eastin’s 23.92 fly split and Morgan Tankersley’s 22.56 free split.
Katie Drabot swept the distance events aftering taking both the 1000 free (9:39.28) and 500 free (4:45.77).
Stanford’s Erin Voss held a narrow lead over UCLA’s Kenisha Liu to win the 200 free in a 1:45.92. Liu took second behind Voss in a 1:46.81. Voss took her second victory in the 200 back with a 1:54.06. UCLA’s Liu went on to win the 100 free for UCLA, dipping under 50 seconds with a 49.80.
After leading the winning Stanford medley relay, Canadian Olympian Taylor Ruck dominated the 100 back in a 52.16, winning by nearly 2 seconds. Hannah Kukurugya also won the 200 fly by almost 2 seconds for Stanford with a 1:57.09.
Stanford’s Anya Goeders won the 50 free with a 22.33 while teammate Allie Raab took the 200 breast in a 2:11.22.
UCLA earned their second win of the meet in the 100 fly with Amy Okada’s top time of 54.48.
After winning the 100 breast (1:01.40), Stanford’s Ella Eastin took the 400 IM in a blistering 4:03.23. Her winning time was good enough for her first pool record, which was formerly held by Julia Smit (4:05.14).
The Stanford women closed out their meet victory in the 200 free relay, where their A-relay won with a 1:30.37. Taylor Ruck lead off that relay with a 22.33, which tied Goeders’ time earlier in the meet.
On Saturday, the Stanford women will travel to USC while UCLA will host Cal for day 2 of their PAC-12 dual meet weekend.
