Distance Freestyler Nico Hernandez-Tome Commits to Alabama

Nico Hernandez-Tome, a senior at Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida, has announced via social media his intention to swim for the University of Alabama next fall.

Hernandez-Tome competes for Riverview and Sarasota YMCA Sharks. He finaled in the 200 free (5th with 1:41.08) and 500 free (4th, 4:30.74) at the 2017 FHSAA Class 4A Championships last November. He finished off his senior year in style, going lifetime bests in the 500/1000/1650 free and 400 IM at the 2018 YMCA Short Course National Championships in April. There, Hernandez-Tome placed 3rd in the 1000, 4th in the 500 free and 400 IM, and 5th in the mile. At the Florida Swimming Senior Short Course Championships in February, he came in 8th in the 1650, 12th in the 400 IM, and 17th in the 500.

  • 1650 free – 15:36.90
  • 1000 free – 9:07.32
  • 500 free – 4:26.50
  • 200 free – 1:40.81
  • 400 IM – 3:55.45

Hernandez-Tome will join current Tide distance swimmers Evan Heldman and Daniel Kober next fall. Also suiting up for the class of 2022 will be Cole Brown, Colton Stogner, John Shelstad, Nicholas Perera, Noland Deas, and Spencer Walker.
