Day 3

Nice’s Charlotte Bonnet wrapped up the 2018 FFN Golden Tour Camille Muffat – Marseille with a new French National Record in the 100 free, going 53.36 to win the final event. Bonnet, known mostly for her 200 free which landed her a spot in the final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and again at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, has been making a great deal of progress on her short game over the last year. And now she has erased Malia Metella’s 53.49 from the French record books. Metella, the older sister of Marseille’s Mehdy Metella, clocked her 53.49 at the 2009 French Elite Nationals in Montpellier, the qualifying meet for XIII FINA World Championships in Rome. Bonnet’s 53.36 landed her in the world’s top 6 for the season:

Fantine Lesaffre opened Sunday’s finals session with a thrilling win in the 400 free over Great Britain’s Leah Crisp. Up by 1.2 seconds at the 300 mark, Lesaffre just barely held off Crisp to win 4:17.44 to 4:17.64. In the following race, Tunisia’s Mehdi Lagili edged Jordan Pothain, 1:49.19 to 1:49.87 to win the 200 free. Pothain had a half body-length lead at the 100, but Lagili steadily gained control over the second half of the race. Pothain held on for second despite strong finishes from Roman Fuchs (1:50.11) and Tunisia’s Mohamed-Aziz Ghaffari (1:50.16). Lesaffre also placed second in the 200 back with 2:15.25, while Turkey’s Ekaterina Avramova dropped 3.3 seconds to win in 2:14.26.

In their third head-to-head matchup of the weekend, Metella again edged Jeremy Stravius, this time in the 100 fly. Stravius was out first, 24.59 to 24.89, but Metella brought it home 6/10 faster to get the win, 52.29 to 52.59. Turkey’s Umitcan Gures touched out Portugal’s Luiz Ribeiro, 53.87 to 54.00, for third. In the women’s event, Marie Wattel won in 58.78, better than her 59.25 from the second Golden Tour stage in Sarcelles but nearly 1.3 seconds off her seed time. Both Bonnet and Marseille sprinter Mélanie Henique swam in prelims but scratched the final. Margaux Fabre, who stunned with her 200 fly victory on Saturday, went a PB by 6/10 to come in second in 1:00.53.

Greece’s Apostolos Christou went right at his seed time to win the men’s 200 back with 2:00.74. A trio of Frenchmen followed in quick succession: Paul-Gabriel Bedel (2:01.34), Simon Brefuel (2:01.63), and Mewen Tomac (2:01.84). Tunisia’s Berkay-Omer Ogretir captured gold in the 100 breast (1:01.22), leading an all-international podium for the first time in the meet. Maxime Grousset finished the day with a victory in the 50 free, going 22.38 ahead of Marseille teammates Oussama Sahnoune (22.43), Yonel Govindin (22.53), and Clément Mignon (22.80).
