Chantal Van Landeghem Drops 7th Fastest 50 Free This Season

Chantal Van Landeghem was all speed in the 50m freestyle final, driving forward in order to snag her second individual swim for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with a swift 24.63.

Van Landeghem was just 0.24 second shy of her Canadian record mark of 24.39. The time was fast enough however to get her under the FINA ‘A’ standard and get her hand on the wall first with the seventh fastest time in the world this season.

Van Landeghem proved last year that she has what it takes to race the best after a fourth place finish in the 50m freestyle at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Her time tonight reiterates the fact that she’s one of the best sprinters in the world, putting her in a great position as she begins training for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Van Landeghem solidified her qualification for the Games last night in the 100m freestyle final where she finished second to young up-and-comer Penny Oleksiak.

Individually Van Landeghem will be swimming the 50 and 100m freestyles in Rio, but she will also get the chance to represent Canada on the 4x100m freestyle relay.

Van Landeghem is one of the four who makes up the relay which is made up entirely of her teammates at the High Performance Centre – Ontario who train with her under Ben Titley.
