Sjöström Takes Three Events on the First Day of the Swedish Grand Prix

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five male and female swimmers based on FINA points scores.

World champion Sarah Sjöström took three events on the first day of the Swedish Grand Prix in Malmö. Sjöström first won the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 57.13. Her time was well off the 56.38 which she put up at the Grand Prix in Austin two weeks ago. In the 50 backstroke, an event she does not often swim, Sjöström broke her own national record of 28.22 which she posted in 2015 winning the event in a time of 28.21. Her final event of the day was the women’s 50 freestyle where she hit the wall first in a time of 24.64.

Fellow World Championship team members Magalena Kuras and Ida Marko-Varga took silver and bronze in the 50 freestyle. Kuras finished in a time of 25.44 followed by Marko-Varga who touched in a time of 25.67.

On the men’s side World Championship team members Christoffer Carlsen and Erik Persson walked away with gold in their pockets after the first night of the competition. Carlsen won the 100 freestyle in a time of 50.46 while Persson won the 200 breaststroke posting a time of 2:12.80.

  • Men’s 50 breaststroke – Alexander Morgan – 29.10
  • Men’s 400 IM – Adam Paulsson – 4:28.78
  • Men’s 100 backstroke – Yakov Toumarkin – 55.83
  • Women’s 200 IM – Jaqueline Hippi – 2:17.56
  • Men’s 200 butterfly – Jesper Björk – 2:01.32
  • Men’s 400 freestyle – Victor Johansson – 3:56.35
  • Men’s 50 butterfly – Marcus Shlesinger – 24.27
  • Women’s 200 backstroke – Ida Lindborg – 2:15.73

Sarah’s time in the 50 backstroke was also an improvement of her Swedish record in the event by 1/100.
