Brazil Open Day 3 Prelims Recap: Medeiros Grabs New SA Record

The third prelims session for the 2015 Brazil Open (Troféu Daltely Guimarães e Torneio Open 2015), one of two Olympic-qualifying meets for the country of Brazil, took place in Palhoca, Santa Catarina this morning. Over the last two days, 10 swimmers have hit Olympic ‘A’ marks in individual events, and this morning saw another 7 ‘A’ swims.

As a reminder, Brazil will select its team based solely on FINA’s rules for Olympic rosters, rather than adding extra time standards, as the nation has done in its past. Brazil will bring up to two swimmers per event who have hit FINA’s “A” standard. If no swimmer hits the “A” time, Brazil will bring one swimmer with a “B” time. The Brazilian Swimming Federation also has a framework in place to add extra relay swimmers and to adjust the roster as it sees fit to compose the best roster for the Olympics the nation will host next summer.

Fifteen-year-old Ana Zortea qualified first in the non-Olympic event with a 30.11, followed by Aline Caetano in 30.25, and Maria Almeida in 30.46.

On the men’s side, Daniel Orzechowski clocked 25.10 to qualify first, followed by Guilherme Guido (25.15) and Guilherme Masse (25.59). Orzechowski’s swim moves him to fifth in the world rankings, and Guido moves up to sixth, followed by Masse in a tie for 18th.

1 Qualifier from Prelims: Etiene Medeiros (54.26, South American Record)

After a disappointing 100 back yesterday, Etiene Medeiros made her first Olympic ‘A’ cut by swimming 54.26 in the 100 free. That swim also displaces the old South American record, a 54.61 set by Larissa Oliveira in December 2014 and then tied by Oliveira this summer at Pan Am Games. Medeiros clocked the 14th fastest swim in the world this season.

She hit nearly a second ahead of second qualifier Manuella Lyrio (55.32) and third qualifier, the former record holder Oliveira (55.37). Medeiros clocked the 14th fastest swim in the world this season.

4 Qualifiers from Prelims: Nicolas Oliveira (48.41), Matheus de Santana (48.71), Marcelo Chierighini (48.85), Alan Vitoria (48.96)

A whole relay worth of swimmers hit the ‘A’ time this morning in prelims of the 100 free. Nicolas Oliveira, who already hit an ‘A’ cut in the 200, qualified first for tonight’s final in 48.41. Matheus de Santana swam a 48.71, followed by Marcelo Chierighini in 48.85 and Alan Vitoria in 48.96. All four swimmers were under the FINA ‘A’ mark.

These prelim swims shook up the world rankings. Oliveira moves to 4th fastest in the world this year, de Santana hits 11th, Chierighini is 13th, and Vitoria ties for 15th.

The women’s 200 breaststroke swimmers may be saving up their energy for tonight. No swimmers hit FINA ‘A’ or ‘B’ cuts. Carolyne de Souza qualified first in 2:34.44, followed by Beatriz Travalon in 2:34.82 and Pamela Souza in 2:34.93.

Thiago Simon qualified first in the men’s 200 breast, clocking a 2:13.12. Tales Cerdeira came in over a second behind in 2:14.34, followed by Andreas Mickosz in 2:14.71. The top 5 swimmers in this event made the FINA ‘B’ cut.

Women’s 200 IM PRELIM

FINA B Cut- 2:18.96

After a speedy event-winning and ‘A’ qualifying 400 IM last night, Joanna Maranhao just missed the ‘A’ cut in the 200 IM, swimming a 2:14.42. She finished well ahead of the field and will have another chance to make the mark tonight. Nathalia Almeida came in next with 2:19.45, followed by Florencia Perotti  in 2:19.77.

2 Qualifiers from this Morning: Henrique Rodrigues (1:58.26), Thiago Pereira (1:58.32)

Two swimmers cleared the FINA ‘A’ cut by two seconds in the men’s 200 IM this morning. Henrique Rodrigues finished first in 1:58.26, and South-American record holder in this event Thiago Pereira swam a 1:58.32. They’ll come together for what should be an exciting race tonight. Rodrigues now sits at fourth in the world rankings, while Pereira is tied for fifth.
