St. Louis Eeks Out Win Over Little Rock in 147-146 Decision

St. Louis women’s swimming and diving topped Arkansas Little Rock on the road on Saturday, narrowly eeking out the win with 147 points to Little Rock’s 146. They also beat Henderson State in the process with a score of 198-93. The Little Rock women grabbed a 170-112 victory over Henderson State. The men also took home a victory over Henderson State, 174-124.

LITTLE ROCK – Little Rock swimming and diving split its first home meet of the season as it won 170-112 over Henderson State while taking a narrow 147-146 loss to Saint Louis at the Donaghey Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

For the afternoon, the Trojans were able to win 10 different events.

Little Rock started the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as the team of Laura Ruiz Astorga,Nuria Gallego Murcia, Courtney Coe and Emma Doll came in with a time of 1:50.27.

In the second event, sophomore Tori Fryar picked up the win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:30:.88. Kayla Grimm took fourth place in the event with a time of 11:08.47 while Steph Lauer and Anela Everett came in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Coe won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:09.75 while Jinson Kang placed third with a time of 2:12.47.

Samantha Gray earned the win in the one-meter dive with a score of 249.85. Gray later finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 236.25, just 2.30 points off the winning score.

Doll placed first in the 100-yard freestyle as she touched the wall in 53.54 seconds. Chelsea Ebert, Ann Kharlamova and Kara Knapschaefer placed eighth, ninth and 11th, respectively.

Ruiz Astorga earned her first individual collegiate win with a time of 2:07.89 in the 200-yard backstroke.Shayna Underwood placed sixth while Courtney Goff came in ninth.

Fryar took her second win of the day in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.97. Lauer and Knapschaefer came in ninth and 10th, respectively.

Coe took her second win of the afternoon in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.18. Sophomore Cassie Sanchez earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:05.15.

Kang won her first event of the season in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:40.00 while Grimm finished seventh.

Little Rock closed out the afternoon with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The squad of Doll, Ruiz Astorga, Fryar and Coe came in with a time of 1:38.61. Ebert, Imre Van Huyssteen, Sanchez and Kharlamova placed third with a time of 1:43.32 while the team of Knapschaefer, Underwood, Gallego Murcia and Goff placed fifth with a time of 1:44.20.

Doll took a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle as she finished just .07 seconds off the first-place time of 1:56.62.

Ruiz Astorga finished second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.46 while Underwood and Goff finished fourth and eighth, respectively.

Gallego Murcia and Van Huyssteen placed second and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 1:09.39 and 1:10.16, respectively. Gallego Murcia also finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.19, just .04 seconds off the winning time.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Sanchez placed sixth with Ebert and Knapschaefer placing eighth and 10th.

Little Rock returns to action next Friday and Saturday as they travel to Pensacola, Fla., to face West Florida, Tulane and Air Force.

Henderson State:

Henderson State opened the 2015 swimming season and turned in a solid performance against NCAA Division I opponents.

The Red Wave men lost to St. Louis 174-124, while the Red Wave women came up short against Little Rock 170-112, and St. Louis 198-93.

On the men’s side, the 200 medley relay team of Hunter Arnold, Joshua Lawson, Max Pohl and Caleb Murders took the top spot with a time of 1:35.52.

Colton Laramore placed second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:08.19, while Guy Buls swam to a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke touching the wall in 54.19.

Joshua Lawson won both breaststroke events winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.58, followed by a victory in the 200 breaststroke clocking in at 2:09.15.

Kameron Brown took first-place in both diving events winning the 1 meter dive with a score of 222.55, and the 3-meter board with 230.55.

Adam Zmijewski was second in the 1-meter (214.05) and third in the 3-meter (148.75).

Pohl placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:57.72) as well as the 100 butterfly (51.49), while Murders was second in the 50 freestyle (21.76).

Also recording a second-place finish was Buls in the 200 backstroke (1:58.43)

Lindsey Butler led the women taking first-place in the 100 backstroke with an impressive time of 59.10 as well as the 50 freestyle 25.13. Butler also took a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:08.11).

Sarah Helton was Henderson’s other winner by taking the top spot in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.94.

Sarah Medellin was second in the 100 freestyle (55.07).
