2025 NCAA Division III Championships: Day 4 Ups/Downs

2025 NCAA DIII Swimming and Diving Championships

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final and places 9 through 16, the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, and “Down” to swimmers in the B final.

The Denison men are on track to take home the team title, a redemptive performance for the Big Red after placing 6th last year. They have a whopping eight finalists competing tonight, highlighted by three A finalists in the 200 breast. When the dust settles, Denison is projected to win the overall title by over 100 points.

But that’s not the story of the meet: that belongs to the women’s race, where the MIT women are projected to overtake NYU and take home their first overall team title. From the swimming events contested this morning, the Engineers will have seven finals swims. That includes three A finalists in the 100 free and a middle lane in the 400 free relay. Add in a 1/1 performance from their divers in 3-meter preliminaries, and MIT is on track for a dominant final night.

There are a few bumps in the road. For one, NYU enters tonight’s session with a 20 point lead over the Engineers. There’s also the mile to consider, where NYU holds the top two times from the early heats; one of those swimmers is likely to score within the top eight. The Violets can only count on four finals swims tonight, Kaley McIntyre is as close as a lock as you can get in the 100 free. Add in the scores from their divers in the consolation final, and we could see a team title that’s decided in the final relay.

Note: These projections do not include seeding for the 1650 free or preliminary results from women’s 3-meter diving.
