Texas won their 16th NCAA title over the weekend, edging out bitter rivals Cal. Here are the numbers. All of the numbers. Current photo via Jack Spitser/Spitser Photography
The highest scoring class at the meet was the Cal 5th years with 187.5 points. Next best were the Indiana seniors with 138.
The standings are due for a shake up up top next year as Cal’s top 2 streak will be in danger. The Bears return only the 7th most individual points with 43 returning. That’s miles behind the top 2 of Texas with 209.5 and Florida with 150.
Indiana’s divers scored enough points (117) to finish in the top 10 of the team competition on their own.
The most points any team scored in an event was Cal’s 61 in the 200 back. Next best was Indiana’s 52 in the 100 breast.
The top individual point scorer was Texas junior Hubert Kos with a perfect 60. Next best were Texas sophomore Rex Maurer with 57 and Florida junior Josh Liendoalso with 57.

Individual Breakdown
Power are Swimulator power points. Those are a way to quantify time quality independent of what event the time is from. Includes only final times and final dive scores.
The PowerPoints algorithm is interesting. Definitely an interesting tool to give a ballpark rating on performance. Notably appears to overvalue sprinting compared to some other events, as the 200 back record earned less than a thousand points, and many sprinters accomplished that with less comparably successful swims. Still, very cool tool and love the stats in article, thank you

In football defense wins championships. In swimming diving wins championships. When will Cal figure this out. Texas has not won a championship on swim points since 2017. Texas is a better program while Cal is a better swim school.

I’d love to see the numbers run on how transfers had an impact on the top 3 teams. If Bowman never jumps ship and ASU retains their roster the meet looks vastly different. Rex probably ends up out of Stanford/with Bowman regardless and Henveaux with Cal.
Chris maybe ends up at Cal too?
I think all things considered Cal and ASU probably end up battling it out again without the Bowman move.
With all the transfers where the top 3 team have imported a lot of fresh talent, Florida has done very with no transfers or questionable 5th years. Although they had an unfortunate DQ on the 200 med relay, all things considered they should be happy with the result.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year with alot of these SR/5yr dominated finals opening up.
Will the points still be mostly by upper classmen, or will the under classes get more scoring opportunities.

And I think we can add Johnston’s 30 points to Texas for next year – he stated he is returning.

Cal has a lot of points to find for next year. IU has a strong junior class, but 0s for freshmen and sophomores isn’t great. Though Dylan Smiley will likely be a multi-event scorer next year with the mass exodus from sprint freestyles.

Great stats !!
What jumps out for me is the diving component. Indiana huge numbers, Cal with 1 point…it truly is a Swimming & Diving Championship. Thanks to all the people at SwimSwam highlighting, commenting and discussing the events, the swimmers, what a great week.
