Chinese 17-year-old Qianting Tang posted a massive personal best of 1:03.99 to lead the way in semifinals of the women’s 100 breast in Abu Dhabi. The swim was a personal best for Tang by over a second, and she shattered the Chinese Record and broke the Asian Record with the performance. Here is a split comparison between Tang’s race tonight, the previous Chinese Record of 1:04.52, which was held by Shi Jinglin, and the previous Asian Record of 1:04.05, held by Miho Teramura (Japan):

Split Qianting Tang 2021 SC World Champs (New Record) Miho Teramura 2016 World Cup – Tokyo (Previous Asian Record) Shi Jinglin 2014 SC World Champs (Previous Chinese Record)
1st 50 29.84 30.43 30.74
2nd 50 34.15 33.62 33.78
Final Time 1:03.99 1:04.05 1:04.52

The difference in race strategy between Tang, Jinglin and Teramura is interesting. Tang took the race out much faster than the previous record holders, but was significantly slower on the 2nd 50.

In fact, Tang took her race out so fast tonight that she broke the Chinese Record in the 50 breast as well. Her initial split of 29.84 downed the previous record, which was held at 29.90 by Zhao Jin from the 2010 SC World Champs.
