The University of Iowa swimming and diving team announced its 2018-19 team awards during their annual awards banquet Tuesday night following the annual Golden Herkys.
The University of Iowa swimming and diving team will send the women’s team to Champaign, Illinois to face Illinois and No. 13 Notre Dame on Friday, while the Hawkeye men’s team hosts the Fighting Irish on Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT).
Seniors Chris Dawson and Jerzy Twarowski and juniors Kenneth Mende and Jack Smith, along with freshman Anton Hoherz took home top awards on the men’s side, while sophomore Hannah Burvill and freshman Jayah Mathews earned top honors for the women in the 2017-18 season.
The Iowa Hawkeyes faced off against the Western Illinois Leathernecks in both teams’ last regular season meet. The Hawkeyes came away victorious in both the men’s and women’s meets.
The University of Iowa diving team travels to Minneapolis this week to compete at the Minnesota Diving Invitational.
Hosted by the University of Minnesota, the meet will take place at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center from Thursday through Saturday. The women’s and men’s 1-meter and 3-meter finals will start at 5 p.m. (CT) Thursday and Friday, while platform diving will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Junior Will Brenner leads the men’s squad off the 1-meter this season with a season-best score 353.65. Freshman Anton Hoherz leads the Hawkeyes off the 3-meter after posting a 387.50 score against Purdue — a score that ranks third all-time in the UI record books. Hoherz was named Big Ten Freshman and Diver of the Week on Oct. 11.
On the women’s side, Junior Jacintha Thomas leads Iowa off the 1-meter with a season-best of 307.60 — the seventh best score in school history. Thomas was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Oct. 11. Freshman Jayah Mathews is Iowa’s top performer off the 3-meter after posting a season-best score of 315.00 against Michigan State and Northern Iowa, a performance that ranks 10th all-time. Mathews was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 1.
Following the Minnesota Diving Invitational, Iowa swimmers will travel to Minneapolis for the Minnesota Jean Freeman Invitational from Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
Tevyn Waddell was one of five Minnesota women who won a pair of individual events as they rolled past Iowa.
