Spanish Nats 50 Back Runner-Up Paula Rodriguez Rivero Commits to Minnesota

Spanish backstroker Paula Rodriguez Rivero has signed with Minnesota’s class of 2024. She trains club with Real Canoe NC, which is based in Madrid.


  • 50 back – 28.98 (25.07)
  • 100 back – 1:01.83 (53.71)
  • 200 back – 2:15.14 (1:58.02)

Rodriguez, one of Spain’s top sprint backstrokers right now, is coming off of a 2019 season where she placed second in the 50 back and third in the 100 back at the 2019 Spanish Spring National Championships. She hit lifetime bests in all three backstroke events, including her 1:01.83 in the 100 back which broke her own Spanish Junior record of 1:02.30.

At the 2019 B1G Championships, Rodriguez would’ve made the 100 back B final and the 200 back C final with her converted bests. Minnesota is set to graduate 24.46/51.76/1:52.46 backstroker Tevyn Waddell after this season while Emily Cook, a 24.30/52.02/1:56.54 backstroker, has one season left to overlap with Rodriguez.

Rodriguez will join the program next year alongside Danielle Cramer, Elle NiebuhrHolley DennisKatia SoudakovaMegan Van Berkom, Maeve O’Driscoll, and Pyper Doo.
