MALIBU, Calif. – The San Diego State swim and dive team continued its dominance in dual-meet competition on Thursday with an 83-59 victory over Pepperdine at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
With the decision, the Aztecs notched their 78th consecutive dual-meet victory since Jan. 8, 2018, maintaining their unblemished record against the Waves intact at 25-0, including a 15-0 mark in Malibu.
SDSU captured seven swimming events on the day, posting 1-2 finishes in both relays to highlight another successful meet. Additionally, the Aztecs recorded the top seven fastest times in the 100 individual medley and featured at the least the top three times in two other individual events.
The Aztecs set the tone at the outset with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as the quartet of Abby Storm, Moa Bergdahl, Emily Tenczar and Alyssa Schiller joined forces for a winning time of 1:41.94, while the foursome of Liv Peebles, Elisa Branca, Alli Mann and Kaydence Bispo followed in second with a clocking of 1:43.63.
SDSU kept the momentum rolling in the 50 butterfly, where Mann claimed the event title after touching the wall at 25.37, edging fellow teammates Liv Peebles (25.74) and Alex Downing (25.80).
Shortly thereafter, Storm snared the individual crown in the 50 backstroke after completing the race at 25.68, while Downing took second at 26.64, followed by Reka Nyiradi, who completed a sprint of 27.73 to finish fourth.
The Aztecs pocketed another victory in the 50 breaststroke, where Bergdahl logged a winning effort of 28.90, while Elisa Branca was slotted second at 30.08, followed by Roni Black, who took third after clocking in at 30.58.
SDSU also grabbed the top three spots in the 50 freestyle, where Mann and Schiller tied for first after both touched the wall at 23.44, followed closely by Camille Seiley (24.08).
The Aztecs’ depth was exemplary in the 100 IM, where Amber Janky emerged victorious after completing the race at 58.75, while Peebles (59.39) edged Sierra Tallman (59.40) for the second spot. Not to be outdone, Bergdahl posted the fourth-best time in the event at 59.44, followed closely by Melanie Quinto (59.45), while Branca (1:00.21) and Black (1:00.30) were slotted sixth and seventh, respectively, as all four swims were deemed exhibitions.
In the final event of the day, the Aztec foursome of Storm, Quinto, Schiller and Bergdahl captured the crown in the 200 freestyle relay after recording a winning performance of 1:34.79, while the team of Peebles, Downing, Mann and Bispo clocked in at 1:36.23 to finish second.
The Scarlet and Black also had three divers compete in the 1-meter springboard, as Meja Palmer took second with 222.30 points, while Lucy Chavez (200.18) landed in the sixth spot, followed by Sophia Hineline (171.00), who placed seventh.
San Diego State continues it weekend excursion on Friday, Oct. 10, when it competes on the first day of the Fresno State Invitational, starting at 11 a.m. PT with the early session, while the meet reconvenes at 6 p.m. for the evening set of events. MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine Swim and Dive wrapped up its first dual meet of the season with a brief eight-event meet this morning against victorious San Diego State.
The meet featured the 50 back, 50 breast, 50 fly, 100 IM, 200 free relay, 200 medley relay, and 1-meter dive.

Layla Busquets added her name to a pair of podium finishes. She took third in the 50 back (26.86) and was joined by teammates Charli Sunahara, Aliyah Fan, and Anna Ryan in the 200 medley relay for a bronze effort (1:46.23).
The Fan sisters both were top Pepperdine finishers in select events. Aliyah took fourth in the 50 fly (26.08) while her older sibling, Kiana, led the Waves in the 100 IM (1:01.02).
Other blue and orange leaders included Charli Sunahara in the 50 breast (31.03) and Anna Ryan in the 50 free (24.45).
The Waves ended the day in the 200 free relay with Layla Busquets, Aliyah Fan, Maile Sullivan, and Anna Ryan (1:37.97).
DIVE RECAP
Freshman Jackie Johnson has earned victories in each of her first two collegiate meets. Last week she posted a record-setting performance in the 3-meter, and today won the 1-meter event with a score of 230.93.
Amanda Wong earned third for the Waves with a score of 220.95.
