Gigi Hioki won a pair of individual titles and swam on two winning relays for a South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team that recorded a 203-96 victory over Augustana in dual action Friday afternoon at the Marshall Center Pool.
The Jackrabbits picked up their first dual win of the season, improving to 1-2 overall. Augustana was making its season debut.
A junior from Honolulu, Hawaii, Hioki posted a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.20 seconds that was nearly four seconds faster than runner-up and teammate Lucia Lopez (1:59.08). Later in the meet, Hioki won the 100 freestyle in 53.96 seconds.
In addition, Hioki anchored Jackrabbit relay squads that book-ended the meet with victories. The 400 medley relay quartet of Lily Esmas, Jessalyn Carpenter, Emma Ingalls and Hioki opened the meet with a winning time of 3:58.41, while the foursome of Jenna Currrier, Mia Pendleton, Sara Juez and Hioki clocked the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:37.07 to close out the meet.
Pendleton earned an individual victory of her own in the 50 freestyle, 24.97 seconds, to go along with a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle, 54.77 seconds.
The Jackrabbits made it a sweep of the freestyle events as freshman Marissa Renaud won the 500 freestyle in 5:23.74 and Poppy Mead claimed the 1,000 freestyle in 10:47.72.
Adding victories for SDSU in the butterfly events were Juez in the 50-yard race, 26.82 seconds, and Isabella Gnewuch in the 100 fly, 58.77 seconds.
Other winners for the Jackrabbits were freshman Jessalyn Carpenter in the 100 breaststroke, 1:07.22, and Kailee Crane in the 200 individual medley, 2:12.01.
