Akron Women, Cleveland State Men Claim Titles at 2025 Zips Classic

Five programs competed this past weekend at Ocasek Natatorium for the 2025 Zips Classic. The Akron women left no doubt at home, while the Cleveland State men fended off Youngstown State to capture the men’s crown.

Women’s Recap

Akron set the tone from the start and never looked back. Their 200 medley relay of Martyna Piesko (25.36), Claire Cox (27.36), Felicia Klintemar (22.10), and Ada Szwabinska (22.10) posted 1:38.77, topping their own meet record mark from 2021 by one-hundredth of a second. Later, their 400 free relay quartet (Klintemar, Hannah Trainer, Helena Lalkovic, Szwabinska) clocked 3:20.47, and their “I” relay was second in 3:22.28.

In individual events, Claire Cox not only won the 100 breast in 1:01.29, but also lowered the meet record. She added a runner-up finish in the 200 breast (2:18.14) behind teammate Madelyn Bosler (2:16.91). Klintemar took the 100 fly in 53.06, and Lalkovic won the 200 free (1:49.82). Akron swept the 200 back — Piesko (1:56.64), Avery Knight (1:59.04), and Abbey Cronin (2:00.54).

The Xavier women claimed the runner-up spot, led by multiple strong individual performances. Olivia Oyster won the 100 free (49.91) and placed second in the 200 free (1:51.64). Norah Simich polished off a butterfly double, winning both 100 fly (55.32) and the 200 fly (2:00.11). Jordyn Libler took the 200 breast win (2:16.15) and placed second in the 100 breast (1:01.51). Ava Tenhundfeld chipped in a third-place finish in the 400 IM (4:30.49).

Cleveland State’s women rounded out the top three, leveraging consistent scoring across multiple events and relays to lock in third place. Leading the Vikings was Isabella Carabello, who won the 1650 free in a school record setting 16:58.27. Riley Ogilvie also added to the Cleveland State win total, clocking 4L28.18 in the 400 IM.

Youngstown State’s women finished 4th, but still produced several notable results. Hanna Held won the 1-meter diving (242.20). Olivia Sweetman was runner-up in the 500 free (4:57.22), and Hannah Murray finished runner-up in the 200 IM (2:04.31). The YSU 400 free relay of Murray, Orla Macinnes, Chloe Moore, and Sweetman swam 3:29.04 to finish fourth. Macinnes also set a new YSU record in the 100 fly, clocking 55.75.

Denison’s women were led by an 8th-place finish by Emily Harris in the 200 fly (2:08.27), and Quinn Brown’s 17:41.70 1650 free, finishing 9th. On the boards, Lu-Si Minnich finished 7th on 1-meter (209.65), and 7th on 3-meter (199.35).

Men’s Recap

Cleveland State’s men set the bar with depth, meet records, and event sweeps. Their 200 free relay (Joe Parkhurst, Jacopo Lanzo, Justin Schneider, Daniel Lyngaas) kicked off the meet with a meet record 1:21.42. Tyler Schultze shattered the 100 breast meet record (54.59), while Daniel Lyngaas claimed the 100 free meet record (44.89). Aidan Florio lowered the 200 breast to 1:59.46, and the Vikings swept that event with Gorkem Sulun (2:02.54) and Schultze (2:02.60). They also secured a 1–2 in the 100 free (Lyngaas: 44.89, Hudgens: 45.29) and in the 400 IM (Florio: 4:02.30, Brock Wallace: 4:02.80).

Youngstown State stood firm in second, producing multiple meet records and a pair of relay wins. Quinn Cynor was the standout, breaking the 100 back meet record (48.46) and winning both the 200 IM (1:50.28) and 200 back (1:48.58). The YSU 200 medley relay (Cynor, James Slessor, Jacob Gramer, Noah Smith) clocked a meet record 1:28.59. Their 400 free relay (Cynor, Gramer, Smith, Lorenz Beck) also set a meet record 2:58.60. Poyraz San Askin won the 1650 free (15:44.40), and Valer Kennedy (1:49.41) and Beck (1:50.64) placed 2nd and 3rd in the 200 fly.

Xavier’s men placed third and notched several individual victories and relay contributions. Aiden Leamer won the 100 fly (48.42); Brayden Mandacina won the 200 breast (2:06.62). Matt Fralic was second in the 100 back (49.53) and won the 200 back (1:51.28). Kyle Hudson won the 100 free (45.63) and was third in the 200 free (1:40.16). On relays, Sean McGinley, Matthew Adanin, Fralic, and Hudson posted 1:22.34 in the 200 free relay (third place), and the 200 medley relay touched 3rd in 1:30.13. Their 400 free relay also placed third in 3:00.66.

Denison’s men closed their weekend with a notable win in diving. Nick Fogle, after finishing second on day one, won the 1-meter diving with 269.50 points. He anchored Denison’s two-day team total of 562 points. The Big Red also posted multiple top-five finishes, including George Goins, who swam the 1,650 free in 16:06.02 (4th place, 15 pts), and anchored their 400 free relay 3:02.78, finishing 4th.
