Russia Breaks 2 Championship Records on Day 3 of Euro Juniors

2019 EUROPEAN JUNIOR SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

16-year old Daria Vaskina broke the European Junior Championships Record in the women’ 50 meter backstroke on Friday en route to an event title. She swam a 27.82, winning by almost 4-tenths ahead of Israel’s Anastasya Gorbenko. That broke her own record of 27.90 that was set in a title-winning swim last year in Helsinki. Her best time is a 27.74 from Aprils National Championship meet that is also the Russian Junior Record.

Later in the session, she combined with 3 Russian teammates to break another Championship Record – this one as part of Russia’s dominant women’s 400 medley relay. She split 1:00.50 on the leadoff and joined forces with Anastasia Makarova (1:07.86), Aleksandra Sabitova (58.27), and Ekaterina Nikonova (55.20) to finish in 4:01.83. That took 6-tenths of a second off the old record of 4:02.48 set by Great Britain last year, and won the race ahead of Italy by nearly 4 seconds.
