PHOTO VAULT: High Divers Leap Over the Kazan Kremlin at Dizzying Heights

The FINA World Championships, for many swimming fans, is the all star meet every odd year. Some of the fastest names in the pool are pitted head-to-head at the highest level of competition, and each race seems to bring its own excitement– be it a breakthrough swim for an up-and-coming athlete, the return of a legend back from retirement, or even a world record. One sport not given quite as much attention is high diving. No, not springboard diving, not even platform diving. The best high divers are competing this week, with the women hurtling through the air starting at 20 meters while the men zip through their tumbling at 27 meters. It’s called high diving for a reason, and 20-plus meters in the air is no joke.

We have some incredible photos here courtesy of Simone Castrovillari, who is in Kazan getting some shots of these incredible athletes. These pictures were taken during the semifinals of the high diving competition. For more information on high diving, which is taking place on a platform in the Kazanka River with the Kazan Kremlin serving as a stunning background, click here.

All in all more amenable & photogenic than the gays being thrown off buildings further south by John McCain’s friends .

Look & learn .

All lovely, but the 4th, 5th, and final photos take the cake. Thank you for including such great images on the site.
