Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school Junior Meg Howell of Tallahassee, Florida, will join the Purdue Boilermakers in the fall of 2023. She currently competes for Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club and Maclay School.

I’m SUPER excited to announce my verbal commitment to pursue my athletic and academic career at Purdue University! Thank you to my family, coaches, friends, and teammates for shaping me into the person I am today! I can’t wait to start this new chapter! Boiler up! 🚂💛 #B1G

Howell is a versatile swimmer who competes well in a variety of events. At the 2021 Florida 1A State Championship, she swam season bests in the 200 (1:55.44) and 500 freestyle (5:10.60). Later at the Speedo Holiday Classic in early December, she finished eighth in the 400 IM with a personal best of 4:39.48. She also placed 8th in the 500 freestyle (5:11.76) and set another lifetime best in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.71.

Top SCY Times

  • 100 Freestyle: 54.25
  • 200 Freestyle: 1:52.05
  • 500 Freestyle: 4:56.68
  • 1650 Freestyle: 16:57.64
  • 400 IM: 4:39.48

Though she will need to improve in order to score at the B1G Championships, Howell will have almost two years of training before arriving on campus. Based on her best times, she offers best scoring potential in the mid-distance and distance freestyle events.

To score at last year’s championship meet, it took 1:49.60 in the 200 freestyle, 5:54.48 in the 500 freestyle, and 16:46.27 in the 1650 freestyle. Purdue had one scorer in the 200 freestyle, one in the 500 freestyle, and two in the 1650. They finished ninth out of 13 teams at the 2021 B1G Women’s Championships.

Despite a low scoring showing in mid-distance freestyle last season, the Boilermakers do have a recent history of successful swimmers, most notably 2018 graduate Kaersten Meitz, who competes internationally for the United States and the International Swimming League’s Toronto Titans.

The Boilermakers are led by head coach John Klinge, who is in his 13th year at Purdue. In the 2020-2021 season, he guided swimmers to 11 personal best times, most of which came from first-year athletes. He also helped coach three women to the Olympic Trials: Masy Folcik in the 100 breaststroke, Sylvia Kobylak in the 200 breaststroke, and Hayley Pike in the 1500 freestyle.

Howell will join Gretchen Schneider as a member of the class of 2027.
