MacDonald Wins Solo Free Title To Lead Wheaton At Artistic Swimming National College Champs

LEWISVILLE, Texas – The Wheaton College (Mass.) artistic swimming team placed fifth at the Collegiate National Championship following events on the final day of the title meet at Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas.

The Lyons tallied 58.5 points over the two-day championship, finishing just a point and a half out of fourth place. University of the Incarnate Word won the crown with 95 points after placing third a year ago. Stanford University was a close runner up at 92 points, while Texas Woman’s University finished third with a count of 69 points. Defending champion The Ohio State University placed fourth with 60 points.

Wheaton scored 108.6854 points in today’s team competition to place 11th in the event. The Lyons team routine was performed by sophomore Jo Basco (Painesville, Ohio), first year Renée Goldfinger (Hoboken, N.J.), sophomore Marina Greenwood (Davis, Calif.), junior Hannah Halberg (New York City, N.Y.) and first years Scout Lowrie (Franklin, N.J.) and Olivia Macdonald (Toronto, Ont.).

Stanford won the event behind sophomore Miko Begossi (Alamo, Calif.), first year Elisa Brunel (Austin, Texas), sophomore Ivy Davis (Scottsdale, Ariz.), sophomore Yara Elian (Walnut Creek, Calif.), junior Nicole Goot (Los Gatos, Calif.), first year Ella Rau (Chandler, Ariz.), junior Lindi Schroeder (Andover, Mass.) and senior Emmanuella Tchakmakjian (Moraga, Calif.). The group combined for a top total of 274.9354 points.

DAY 1 RECAP

LEWISVILLE, Texas — Wheaton College (Mass.) first year artistic swimmer Olivia Macdonald (Toronto, Ont.) became the first Lyon in school history to capture the Women’s Solo Free title this afternoon on Day One of the 2024 USA Artistic Swimming National Collegiate Championship at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas. Wheaton College sits atop the team standings after day one.

The Lyons are currently in first place after the opening day of the championship with 51.5 points. University of Incarnate Word sits in the second spot with 38 points, while University of California Los Angeles is in third place tied with Texas Woman’s University with 37 points. Stanford University and The Ohio State University are both locked in at fifth with 35 points.

Macdonald was brilliant in the event, scoring 209.2188 points to finish a whopping 16.5188 points ahead of runner-up Stanford University junior and former Olympian Lindi Schroeder (Andover, Mass.). The Wheaton rookie was judged on her elements, artistic impression, synchronization, as well as her choreography and music, performance and transitions.

Sophomore Jo Basco (Painsville, Ohio) also earned gold on the day for the Lyons, racking up 57.7420 points to earn Wheaton the championship in the D Figures for the second straight season. First year Scout Lowrie (Franklin, N.J.) placed seventh in the category for the Lyons with 51.8699 points.

Macdonald also finished 29th in the A Figures for Wheaton with a score of 72.6101 points. The Ohio State University junior Emily Armstrong (Toronto, Ont.) won the event with a tally of 83.4371 points.

Macdonald paired with first year Renée Goldfinger (Hoboken, N.J.) to total 125.5917 points for the Lyons in the duet to earn a 10th-place showing, while University of the Incarnate Word’s duo of sophomore Elizabeth Battista (Calgary, Alb.) and graduate student Mariia Kriuchkova (Moscow, Russia) earned a winning score of 203.1563 points. Basco teamed with Lowrie to tally 84.5313 points to place 12th in the event for Wheaton and sophomore Marina Greenwood (Davis, Calif.) combined with junior Hannah Halberg (New York City, N.Y.) to put up 71.0875 points to finish 14th.

In addition, Halberg scored 62.7823 points to finish 11th in the B Figures for the Lyons. First year Claire Brett (Calgary, Alb.) ended with a count of 72.0680 points to take the category for UIW. Greenwood posted a 10th-place effort in the C Figures for Wheaton with 54.2491 points with Texas Woman’s University sophomore Ada Monteys Vinardell (Barcelona, Spain) taking gold in the event with a score of 64.2234 points.

The Lyons return to the pool tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. EDT to compete in the trio competition and will also take part in the team competition at 12:30 p.m. at the Westside Aquatic Center.
