Overview:
San Clemente Aquatics Team (SCAT), a USA Swimming-affiliated club in beautiful South Orange County CA, is seeking an experienced and passionate Head Age Group Coach to lead our top developmental training group (ages 11–14). SCAT serves over 250 athletes ranging from National-level competitors to entry-level swimmers and is known for its athlete-centric, IM-based training philosophy. We are committed to fostering a challenging yet supportive environment where swimmers can achieve their fullest potential, both in and out of the water.
This full-time position is ideal for an enthusiastic, dedicated, and knowledgeable coach committed to developing well-rounded athletes and future high school and collegiate swimmers. This pivotal role requires a coach who can skillfully balance the demands and pressures inherent in competitive swimming with a nurturing approach, consistently pushing swimmers to the next level of performance while ensuring their well-being and love for the sport remain paramount. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical foundation, excellent communication skills, a desire to contribute to all aspects of club operations and work closely with the Head Coach to ensure a cohesive and progressive team-wide philosophy.
Primary Responsibilities:
Coaching & Athlete Development
- Lead and manage the Platinum Age Group (Grades 6–8), focusing on stroke fundamentals, advanced race strategies, and long-term athlete development.
- Provide high quality on deck coaching 25–30 hours per week, including practices and meets.
- Design and implement detailed training plans aligned with SCAT’s athlete development model.
- Monitor and evaluate swimmer progress; conduct seasonal evaluations and implement goal-setting practices.
- Attend all assigned home and travel meets; prepare and submit meet entries.
- Teach and model proper stroke mechanics, sportsmanship, and team values.
Team Leadership & Administration
- Supervise and mentor Age Group program staff (Gold and Silver level coaches).
- Collaborate with the Head Coach to plan training cycles, meet schedules, and team events.
- Maintain up-to-date performance records and respond promptly to parent communications.
- Participate in bi-weekly staff meetings and contribute to team-wide strategic planning.
- Support club operations through involvement in fundraisers, clinics, camps, evaluations, and special events.
- Represent SCAT at Southern California Swimming LSC meetings as needed.
Community & Culture
- Actively contribute to a positive team culture rooted in respect, excellence, and athlete well-being.
- Communicate effectively with swimmers, parents, and staff to foster a strong team community.
- Demonstrate professionalism in demeanor, appearance, and ethical behavior at all times.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum high school diploma or GED (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- At least 5 years of experience in competitive swim coaching, preferably at the Age Group level.
- Current USA Swimming coach certifications or ability to complete prior to employment.
- Valid First Aid, CPR, AED certifications.
- Must pass all relevant background checks, including LiveScan, reference, and social media screening.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
Key Skills & Attributes:
- Deep knowledge of stroke technique, training progressions, and athlete development.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lead, inspire, and motivate young athletes in a positive and constructive manner.
- Comfortable with meet entries, team management software, and performance tracking.
