Summary
Serving as the chief officer for the aquatics area, providing leadership in aquatics management and programming in the Student Recreation Center. Primary aquatics responsibilities include operation, collaboration with aquatics facility stakeholders, staffing, programming, event management, singular oversight of aquatics treatment plant, water chemistry, and upkeep as pool operator. Serve as the Risk Management Officer for the Offices of Health & Wellness and Recreation, oversee Health and Safety programming for both professional and student staffs in the offices of Health & Wellness and Recreation, and the community. Review, monitor, and maintain risk management procedures for the department. The Assistant Director coordinates both short and long-term planning for maintenance and enhancements, operating budgets, and youth programming within the aquatic facilities. This role is responsible for generating approximately $200,000 in operating revenue annually.
Essential Functions
- Oversee aquatic operations within the Student Recreation Center including risk management, policy development/enforcement, scheduling, mechanical function, event planning, required inspections, and daily maintenance/upkeep.
- Supervise approximately 60 student employees and oversee hiring, training, evaluations, and discipline processes. Assist employees with issues related to aquatic operations, water chemistry, patrons, and other operational programs such as in-service trainings and accidents/incidents.
- Coordinate planning and scheduling of preventative maintenance, custodial operations, maintenance and repairs, and improvements (to include capital enhancement projects) specific to the aquatic facilities within the Student Recreation Center.
- Serve as the system administrator for software related to operating an aquatic facility or event (Colorado Timing System-DisplayLink, Hy-Tek, scoreboard, etc.). Coordinate all software implementations, updates/enhancements, and troubleshoot issues.
- Directly responsible for the short and long-term planning of all risk management practices within the Offices of Health & Wellness and Recreation for approximately 250 student employees. Oversee all health and safety certification offerings (CPR/AED, First Aid, Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Instructor, CPR/AED Instructor) for members of our offices, campus, and the general community.
- Responsible for generating approximately $200,000 in operational revenue annually.
- Coordinate all planning, implementation, and evaluation of learn-to-swim and other youth programming specific to the aquatic area. Assist in the planning, implementing, and evaluating of additional youth programming (summer and spring break camps).
- Responsible for aquatic operation and youth programming budgets and assist in short and long-term fiscal planning.
- Oversee aquatic events to serve campus (i.e. BGSU Athletics Swim & Dive) and community (youth, high school, and USA Swimming) to aid in overall recruitment and retention.

Minimum Qualifications
The following Degree is required:
- Bachelor’s Degree. Degree must be conferred at time of application
The following Experience is required:
- 1 year experience with pool management, operation and maintenance
- 2 years’ experience as a graduate student equals one year of professional experience
- 1 year experience supervising staff
- 2 years’ experience as a graduate student equals one year of professional experience
The following Experience is preferred:
- 1-year experience in youth programming
The following Certifications are required within 6 months of start date:
- Current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding
- Lifeguard Instructor
The following Certifications are preferred
- Certified Pool Operator
- Water Safety Instructor
- LGIT (Instructor Trainer)
- WSIT (Instructor Trainer)
- CPR/First Aid (Instructor Trainer)
Additional Information
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Ability to work a non-traditional work schedule (may include working early mornings, evenings and weekends)
- Aquatics programming experience
- Swim lesson programming experience
- Comprehensive knowledge conducting aquatic events (swim/dive and water polo meets, Colorado Timing System & Display Link operations, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience maintaining, repairing, replacing aquatic equipment (pool decks, ladders/stairs, gutter grates, lane lines, diving boards, starting blocks, backstroke flags, etc.)
- Youth and family programming experience.
- Positive human relation skills.
- Aquatic facility management experience
- Health & Safety programming experience (CPR/FA, Lifeguard Training classes, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience and success in personnel management.
- Demonstrated communication skills.
- Strong orientation toward customer service.
- Basic computer skills – Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet, and recreation management software.
- Innosoft Fusion software preferred
- Connect2Concepts (C2C) preferred
- Knowledge of promotional concepts.
