Hunter Armstrong posted a lifetime best 21.76 in the 50 freestyle en route to a 2nd place finish on night one in Irvine while fellow US Olympian Caeleb Dressel swam to 3rd in a 21.94.
Armstrong’s previous lifetime best was a 22.00 from the 2022 International Team Trials that he swam to be tied for 5th. Armstrong did not race the event at 2023 US Summer Nationals or at 2024 US Olympic Trials.
Dressel, the American Record holder in the event, has a lifetime best 21.04 that he swam at the 2019 World Championships as well as at 2020 Olympic Trials. He has raced the event four times this summer but had not cracked the 22 second mark until tonight after posting a season best 22.00 in prelims.
Neither Armstrong or Dressel represented the US at the 2025 World Championships as neither swam at 2025 US Summer Nationals back in June.
Armstrong’s swim tonight would have been 4th in the event at 2025 US Summer Nationals while Dressel’s time would have been 6th (7th if Armstrong were also in the heat). It took a 21.77 to final in the event at the 2025 World Championships.
US Men’s 2024-25 Event Rank- LCM 50 free
- Jack Alexy – 21.32
- Santo Condorelli – 21.68
- Jonny Kulow – 21.73
- Hunter Armstrong – 21.76
- Quintin McCarty – 21.79
- Matt King – 21.84
- Chris Guiliano – 21.86
- Drew Salls – 21.93
- Caeleb Dressel – 21.94
Armstrong and Dressel notably teamed up last summer to help the US men’s 4×100 freestyle relay to gold. Armstrong split a 46.75 while Dressel split a 47.53. The two also were members of the US men’s 4×100 medley relay that won silver as Dressel swam the fly leg and Armstrong the free leg.

It’s good to see Hunter have a PB!
Don’t forget my man Drew Salls! 21.93 50FR.
Fast times but Caeleb’s winning days are over
Dressel should be 9th behind Matt King and Drew Salls
Imagine telling someone in 2021 that in a couple years Santo Condorelli would be over a quarter second faster than Caeleb Dressel in the 50 free
AND swims for the US…. again
I would have believed it
I feel Caleb is just winging 2025-2026 and will get into the nitty gritty by 2027 to start prepping for 2028.
He just had his second child, his spending a lot of family time with that as we know, and just has some minimal water contact and gym just so he doesn’t lose the feel, and its too big of a jump to come back.
I think we will see a full effort prep by him, just not sure if his mentality/competitiveness will be in the right place to be ready for LA. Hopefully we will see something Legendary in the making for the 50 Free 50 Fly for him
Matt King 21.8?
Oh man we’re not gonna get daddy Dressel at pan pacs 😞
To be fair, I’m fairly certain at some point he said he probably wasn’t going to Pan Pacs. I could be wrong though.
I still held out hope for my glorious king
Still got 50 fly and he should improved after today
But you do get…Mr. Worldwide…😎
