Florida Atlantic Tops NJCAA’s Indian River State in Friday Dual

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University men’s and women’s swimming & diving team took the win against Indian River State Friday afternoon at FAU Aquatic Center. On the women’s side, the team won 205-95 with nine first place finishes. They also claimed their third consecutive victory over the Pioneers. The men outscored IRSC 184-113, tallying 10 first place titles on the day.

Quick Hits – Women

  • The women’s team opened up the afternoon with a win in the 200 medley relay. Abby Marshall, Fatimah Westbrook, Grace Molinaro and Mackenzie Brown were behind the 1:45.53 finish
  • In the individual events, the women got things started with a sweep in the 1000 freestyle. Spence Atkins (10:20.77), Kirsty Hobson (10:39.69) and Madison Rizzo (10:39.80) finished in that order
  • In addition to the 1000 freestyle, Atkins took first in the 500 freestyle (5:03.88)
  • In the 100 backstroke Abby Marshall claimed first (56.47) and was followed by Miranda Fellowes in third (1:00.32), who swam in her first meet of the season. Marshall would later capture another first place title in the 200 backstroke with Kara Wilkins following in third (2:10.97)
  • In the 200 freestyle, Sharon Kok finish second with a time of 1:54.76 with Sarah Martin following in third (1:55.73)
  • Westbrook took away two individual finishes on the day. Her first came in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.27) with Haley O’Meara following in third (1:07.01). Shortly after, Westbrook took the top finish in the 50 freestyle (24.07) with Brown following in second (24.56)
  • In the 200 butterfly, Molly Jordan claimed second with a time of 2:05.72 and Ashlyn Hunt touched the wall third (2:07.59). Jordan would later take third in the 100 butterfly (58.76)
  • The women swept once more on the day, this time in the 100 freestyle. Martin finished in first (54.11), Kelsey Witkay took second (54.57) and Brown claimed third (54.90)
  • Fellowes capped off individual races with a third place finish in the 200 IM (2:12.15)
  • The women claimed the top two finishes in 400 freestyle relay. Westbrook, Brown, Marshall and Atkins had the winning time at 3:35.21

Quick Hits – Men

  • The men also took the gold in the 200 medley relay with Braedan Leach, Quinn Lacoursiere, Skyler Hamilton and Reilly Maguire finishing in 1:34.50
  • A freshman record was also broken in the 200 medley relay with Kyle Douglas, Carter Januzelli, Rateb Hussein and Andrew Garcia behind the 1:34.58 record time
  • The men also swept in the 1000 freestyle, as Will Smith (9:33.70), Clay Riemenschneider (9:39.68) and Jack Shapiro (9:48.47) all made the proverbial medal stand
  • Josh Fountain claimed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.07. Josh McQueen followed with 1:43.79
  • In the 100 backstroke, Kyle Douglas (50.95) and Braedan Leach (51.63) finished first and second, respectively
  • Hussein came up with two individual finishes on the day in the 200 butterfly (1:49.50) and 100 butterfly (49.66)
  • Connor Smoak also finished with two top times on the day with first place titles coming in the 50 freestyle (21.36) and 100 freestyle (47.56)
  • In the 200 backstroke, Braedan Leach (1:51.39) and Kyle Douglas (1:54.41) finished second and third, respectively. Douglas would later claim first in the 200 IM (1:53.92)
  • Januzelli finished second in the 100 breaststroke (58.76) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:09.98)
  • The men swept once again in the 500 freestyle with Fountain (4:39.84), Smith (4:40.45) and Riemenschneider (4:43.18) finishing in that order
  • Several other third place finishes were completed today, including Fountain (1:59.45 in 200 butterfly), Garcia (21.94 in 50 freestyle), Juan Imposimato (48.67 in 100 freestyle) and Hamilton (51.26 in 100 butterfly)
  • The meet was topped off with a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay courtesy of the 3:09.35 finish by Hussein, Hamilton, Garcia and Smoak

On Deck
The Owls will be back home once again next Friday to face Princeton at 3:30 p.m. This will be the FAU’s Paradise Meet where FAU cups will be passed out to the first 100 fans in attendance.
