One of the stories coming out of this morning’s prelims was the massive time drop for Indiana freshman Josh Bey in the 400 IM. Tonight, he did it again. This time, taking two more seconds off of his newly minted career best of 3:36.92 in 3:34.90, breaking Ohio State’s Tristan Jankovics’ Big Ten conference and championship records of 3:34.98 and 3:35.51, respectively.

On the day, Bey sliced nearly eight seconds off his pre-meet best and secured the first 400 IM title for the Hoosier men since 1992.

This morning, he became one of just 15 freshmen in history to swim under 4:40 in the 400 IM and entered that list as the 5th-fastest freshman ever. With tonight’s performance, he becomes the 2nd fastest freshman ever, only behind Leon Marchand‘s 3:34.08 from the 2021-2022 season.

He also jumps into the top 10 all-time performers in the 400 IM, moving up from 23rd after prelims, to now 8th fastest in history.

Top 10 All-Time 400 IM Performers (SCY):

  1. Leon Marchand– 3:28.82

  8. Josh Bey– 3:34.90
  9. Tristan Jankovics- 3:34.98
  10. Lorne Wigginton– 3:35.21

Michigan’s Lorne Wigginton battled with Bey for the 400 IM title, but finished just off in 3:35.21, breaking Tyler Clary’s Michigan program record. That time makes him the 10th-fastest performer ever in the event.

2025 class is so gifted. When Cooper Lucas went 3:35.2 I was like dang, he’s only a sophomore! Which is true, but you’ve got Josh Bey, as a freshman going 3:34 which is mindboggling meanwhile he was the 6th ranked guy in his class going off Swimswam last year. He’s probably 4th after this season.

400 IM is absolutely insane this season. Half of the top ten performers in history will be facing off at NCAAs.
