This swim also makes him the 10th fastest performer in history, passing Tom Shields by one hundredth of a second. His jump also knocks Frankel down to #12 all-time. Ray is now just the 16th swimmer in history to swim under 44 seconds in the 100 fly.

Ray entered these championships with a lifetime best of 44.00, a swim that earned him a 7th-place finish at last season’s NCAA, and marked a .17-second drop on the day. Ray had only been as fast as 44.78 on the season, but clocked a prelims swim of 44.29 in the prelims to give him a middle lane.

Entering this meet, he was seeded 3rd behind Ohio State’s Matthew Klinge (2nd in finals, 44.48), and Indiana’s Owen McDonald (4th in finals, 44.62).
