The Arizona State men showed off their sprint power in the men’s 50 free at the Big 12 Championships by taking seven out of the eight spots in the ‘A’ final, where the team ended up going 1st through 6th as well as 8th.

Ilya Kharun led the way with a 18.46, breaking his own meet record of a 18.47 that he swam during this morning’s prelims session. Kharun has been as fast as 18.40 this season, a time that sits tied for 1st in the NCAA so far this season.

Remi Fabiani, a Cal Baptist transfer, swam to a 18.68, knocking 0.11 off his lifetime best 18.79 that he swam at midseason.

Including both relays and finals, Arizona State had six men under the 19 second mark. Kharun, Fabiani, Adam Chaney, Jonny Kulow, and Tommy Palmer were all under the mark in finals while Tolu Young swam a 18.96 in prelims and was right on the mark with a 19.00 in finals.

In other exciting news that’s not making headlines.. Luka Mijatovic should be shaved and fully tapered for Sectionals in Roseville this weekend. Considering it’s his last big short course meet before again up to 17-18 age group, he hasn’t tapered since the US Open in early December, and he still has a few months window between now and summer nationals – this is a BIG meet for him.. he’s not swimming the mile tomorrow unfortunately but he has the 200 free, 400 IM on Friday, 200 fly, 500 free on Saturday, and the 1000 free on Sunday.

Looking at swim cloud time rankings there is very real possibility that someone is going to go sub 19 and not make the NCAA meet. Just for context Justin Ress made the final in 19.05 in 2019

That is amazing. With the roster size cap at conference meets to have so many dominant one event. You can tell that ASU puts a lot of emphasis on their sprint program and recruit it and train it very well

I mean that is the bread and butter of their head coach. They have some quality recruits/swimmers in the other disciplines, but they are underperforming so far
