The first finals session of the 2025 European Short Course Championships unfolded in Lublin, Poland and we saw a European Junior record go down on the women’s side.
Racing in the semifinals of the women’s 50m butterfly, 18-year-old Martine Damborg of Denmark clocked a time of 25.06 to tie Germany’s Angelina Köhler for the first semifinal win. Her time held up for equal second-fastest heading into the final, as France’s Beryl Gastaldello won the second semi with a time of 25.00.
Damborg’s time undercut the 25.20 European Junior Record she set during this morning’s prelims, which itself broke the prior record of 25.21 she put on the books last year.
The Danish national record, however, remains out of reach for now. That time sits at the 24.71 retired Olympian Jeannette Ottesen logged at the 2014 Short Course World Championships.
The 18-year-old holds two Danish national records in the short course pool: the 200 free (1:54.82) and 100 IM (58.17).
Damborg broke onto the international scene last summer at the European Junior Championships in Slovakia, racking up 4 individual medals, including gold in the 50m freestyle and 100m fly as well as silvers in the 50m back and 50m fly.
At the World Junior Championships in September, she earned bronze in the 50 fly and finished sixth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 fly 10th 100 free.
Later this week, she’s slated to swim the 50 back (8th seed), 100 fly (11th seed), 50 free (16th seed), 100 free (19th seed), and 100 IM (25th seed).
