Over/Unders: How Many Sub-XX Swims During Men’s Midseason?

Midseason is coming up at the end of next week so it is time to see how many sub-XX swims we will have in numerous races on the men’s side. Sub-XX swims are typically seen as a barrier in the race with only a select few swimmers going under that time.

In our new series called “over/unders” we will use the comment section to allow the public to have a voice. If you think there will be more than that number of sub-swims, use the upvote. If you think there will be less than the number of sub-swims, use the downvote.

  • Example: Over/under: 3.5 men sub-44 in the 100 butterfly. Upvote if you think there will be four or more men going sub-44 and downvote if you think it will be 3 or less.
  • Ex. 2: Upvote if you think 9 or more men will go sub-19 in the 50 free. Downvote if you think 8 or less will go sub-19
Men’s Event Time Current Number Of Sub-XX (11/14) Number Under at 2025 NCAAs Over/Under
50 Free Sub-19 7 14 8.5
100 Free Sub-42 7 25* 11.5
100 Back Sub-45 3 12 6.5
100 Breast Sub-51 2 11 4.5
100 Fly Sub-44 2 6 3.5

*The men’s 100 free had all 16 finalists sub-42 and saw 25 sub-42 marks in prelims.

Over/under is a typical wager used in sports-books. With this, no money will be involved. Simply put, we do the over/unders, you have fun and upvote or downvote, have some friendly debate in the comments.

Based on voting, Arizona State was the most undervalued program in SwimSwam’s first power rankings. IE, the public thinks they should be ranked higher. Stanford was also seen as undervalued, while the public agrees that it looks as if Texas will defend their NCAA title. Indiana, Purdue, and LSU were the most overvalued as the public thinks Indiana will finish lower than 2nd, LSU lower than 12th, and Purdue lower than 15th.

This is a fun addition to swimming…perhaps integrate this AND gambling on times which could elevate interest in our sport. If I could find a site where I can bet 2 bits on how many men will go sub 19 in the 50, it would be amazing!
