SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah swim and dive program started the home slate on a high note as both the men’s and women’s teams came out victorious against Colorado Mesa on Friday afternoon at the Don Reddish Pool inside Ute Natatorium.

The Utes avoided any scary results as the women topped CMU, 192-108, while the men’s side cruised to a 228-72 victory. The Utes came out on top in 26 of 32 events.

“The team stepped up well from last week,” head coach Jonas Persson said. “We still have stuff to work on, but it was certainly a step up and nice to get a win. Colorado Mesa is a very competitive Division II team, very well coached, and I’m happy that we were able to beat them.”

Evan VanBrocklin led the men’s side with 18 points thanks to wins in both the 100 and 200 Free and took gold in the 200 Free Relay alongside Davis StachelekEthan Moore and Sebastian WronaCaleb GallagherNash HaleStrahinja MasloBrandon Miller and Jakub Walter all contributed 13 points in the victory.

On the women’s side, Erin Palmer and Megan Legarth led the way with a team-high 18 points. Palmer logged wins in the 100 Free, 100 Breast and 200 Free Relay and Legarth took gold in both the 100 and 200 Back. The duo also teamed with Veronica Gourley and Julia Bartell to win the 400 Medley Relay.

“It was nice to race at home,” Persson added. “We had a very good turnout which is always nice.”

On the diving board, Utah came out on top in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard on the men’s and women’s side. Elias Petersen made his season debut and took both golds on the men’s side, while Callie Eaglestone and Kathryn Grant each logged a win in their first competition of the season.

“We had a happy Halloween, we had some treats and some tricks today,” head diving coach Richard Marschner said. “We’re just working the process of being great come February, so I’m really happy with the corrections that we made and what we’re doing on a day-to-day basis. We’re going to keep doing that and be great when we need to be.”

  • Legarth won the 100 Back with a 56.95 and the 200 Back with a 2:04.61.
  • Palmer took gold in the 100 Breast with a 1:02.74 and won the 100 Free with a 51.33.
  • Rylee McColley and Teagan Steinmetz finished one-two in the 200 Breaststroke.
  • Steinmetz also won the 400 IM just ahead of Ellie Broughton.
  • Isabella Riso won the 200 Free for her first win of the season.
  • Sydney Even also logged her first win of the year, finishing first in the 200 Butterfly and came in second in the 100 Butterfly.
  • Palmer, Bartell, Riso and Maela McKallip closed the meet with a win in the 200 Free Relay.

On the Boards

  • Elias Petersen made his season debut, winning on both the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter springboards.
  • Attila Bernatsky, who earned Big 12 Men’s Diver of the Week honors on Thursday, finished second on the 3-meter and fourth on the 1-meter.
  • The Utes swept the podium on the women’s 1-meter as Callie Eaglestone (287.63), Kathryn Grant (284.33) and Cierra Cole (240.30) won gold, silver and bronze, respectively.
  • Grant won the women’s 3-meter while Eaglestone logged a second-place finish.

SALT LAKE CITY— Olivia Hansson won two events while Kiara BorchardtAron JonssonAda Qunell and Richard Schmiedefeld all won once to lead the Colorado Mesa University men’s and women’s swimming team’s efforts in a Friday afternoon inter-divisional dual against the NCAA Division I University of Utah here at the Ute Natatorium.

Hansson, who leads the NCAA Division II top times list in both the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle, claimed big wins in both of those disciples.  She also took second in both the 200 free and the meet-capping 200 free relay alongside Qunnel, Borchardt and Tori Bartusiak as the Mavericks, 0-3 in duals against Division I opposition this season, battled to the end of what was a 192-108 Ute victory.

Hansson was the top point scorer in the meet, picking up 22 of the Mavs’ team points.

Meanwhile, Jonson and Schmiedefeld won the 200 breaststroke and 50 free to lead the Maverick men, who are now 1-1 in duals this season, after the 228-72 Ute win.

Jax Juarros also surpassed the NCAA Championship qualifying standard with a runner-up finish in the men’s 1-meter diving event.

Hansson was the first individual winner of the afternoon and took the 1000 free by 8.78 seconds over Utah’s Abigial Pope.  Later, Hansson won the 500 free by 3.02 seconds over Utah’s Taylor Tomey.

The Mavericks also sprinted to victory as Qunell and Schmiedefeld swept the 50 free events with Qunell taking the women’s win in 24.40 seconds, out-touching Maela McKallip.

Meanwhile, Schmiedfled won the men’s race in 21.19 seconds.

Borchardt also sprinted to a winning time of 57.74 seconds in the 100 butterfly while Jonsson won the 200 breast for the second straight meet, touching in 2:02.74.

In addition to their four event wins, the Maverick women claimed seven other second place finishes throughout the 16-event dual.

Taylar HootonAntonia Leese, Borchardt and Qunell combined for the first in the 400 medley relay, finishing in 3:48.04.  Hansson then finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.76.

Hooton then then took second in the 100 back in 57.05 seconds while Abby Uhl finished third in 58.49.

The Mavs also went 2-3 in the 200 fly as Bartusiak finished in 2:09.69 while Amber Siverts was right behind in 2:10.82.

Qunell then added another second place finish in the 100 free with a time of 52.06 seconds before Uhl did the same in the 200 back with a mark of 2:05.39.

Qunell, Borchardt, Bartusiak and Hansson also finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.71.

Meanwhile, Kenya Meyer led the Maverick women’s diving contingent, taking third in the 3-meter event with 252.75 points after taking fourth in the 1-meter with 236.48 points over six dives.

Juarros led the Maverick men’s divers, placing second on the 1-meter with 290.18 points, going over the NCAA qualifying standard of 285.  Ryan Campbell was the top Maverick in the 3-meter event scoring 275.93 points to finish third.

The Ute men took maximum points in the first four events of the dual before Jonsson scored second place points in the 100 breast with a time of 56.44 seconds to preview his later 200-yard win.

Meanwhile, CMU freshman Micah Moore took third in the 200 fly (1:53.86) before Schmiedefeld won the 50 free.  The German sophomore then took second in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.98, preceding Jonsson’s 200 breast victory.

The Mavs also received a third place time of 51.02 seconds from Oskar Sawicki in the 100 fly before Schmiedefeld, Marcos OteroJacob Sampson and Holden Convertino finished third in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.51 to finish the meet.

The Mavericks will now return home and prepare for the TYR/CMU Invitational, which begins on Nov. 19.  The mid-season invite has typically been a bonanza of fast NCAA Championship qualifying times.
