Alex Walsh on Racing First SCM 400 IM of Season: “I did it. And, you gotta start somewhere”

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Westmont

***Sorry for the audio quality, we made a technical error when capturing some of them***

After their outing in the 100 Breast (Douglass 1st, Walsh 3rd), Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh spoke with the media in Westmont. Douglass, when asked about the World Cup scoring system, said that she feels she has shot herself in the foot a bit with her success from last season making it harder for her to score points. Walsh, when asked about competing in the 400 IM, said it was a fine first race in the event for her and she will most likely be swimming it again in Toronto.

Alex must have changed her mind for Toronto. The updated psych sheet released Wednesday shows her racing only the 100/200 breast and 200IM.

We need her to do 400 LCM. With the exceptions of Summer, it is a relatively weak event

Alex Walsh should have never dumped the 400 IM in lieu of the 100 BR during her last season at the University of Virginia.

well you could argue the opposite too. She won the 100 breast and is the third fastest performer in history – without her, Virginia wouldn’t even have had anyone in finals. Katie Grimes was also expected to lead the 400 IM for them, so it actually makes a lot of sense. And guess what? Now Alex is swimming both the 4 IM and 1 BR so joke’s on you

You’ve taken the short term view. Alex Walsh failed to become the heir apparent to Lilly King in the W 100 BR (LCM & SCM).
