Jamie Jack scorched his way to a lifetime best of 21.63 in the 50 free this morning in Irvine, shaving three hundredths off his previous best from the Queensland open Championships in December.

Jack, one of three Australian men seeded in the top five for this event, beat out his Aussie teammate Ben Armbruster by nearly half a second to win the penultimate heat. He also leads the way into the finals tonight as the only man under 22 seconds, with Caeleb Dressel next to him in lane 5 after posting a season best 22.00.

Jack’s time would have placed second at the Australian World Championships this year, 0.05 seconds ahead of Kyle Chalmers. In that final Jack placed 5th in 21.84, just 0.16 behind his senior teammate.

This swim ranks the St. Peter’s Western swimmer 10th in the world this season, and would have been fast enough to qualify for the final at the world championships last week. There, it took a time of 21.77 for 8th in the semi-finals.

He overtakes Isaac Cooper by two-hundredths of a second to slot into the top five Australians all time, and will aim to get close to James Magnusson’s 21.52 in 4th spot tonight.

Not looking good for Isaac Cooper towards LA28 if he is limiting his events to 50 events only .. a lot challengers could come up in the next 3 years

Talk about burying the lead. You have to get all the way through the article to find out what Jack’s time was.

So did nerves get to him at trials or did he go back to how he was training leading into QLD Champs?

I don’t pay much attention to IG. Nice to see he’s trying something different.

This meet counts towards Categorisation Tiers here in Australia which determines the level of funding they receive over the next 12 months. Could be a lot on the line for some of these athletes and pushed into a corner some will come out swinging.

Does anyone know this guys training set up? Is he full time with SPW? Or just a savant of sprinting and does his own thing?

Could be. His stroke completely fell apart in the back half of the 100
