INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy men’s and women’s swim and dive teams celebrated the 2024-25 senior class with a win over Butler and Wabash. With the win, the men’s swim and dive team secured the first undefeated regular season in program history with a 9-0 record.
The men’s team swept every event over Wabash, earning the dual meet win, 280-55 while the women took first in every event but one to defeat Butler, 237-97.
The women’s team started it off with a win in the 400 medley relay. Addy Hirsbrunner, Vicky Surdyka, Lillian Brandt and Emmaleigh Zietlow combined to record a fast time of 3:46.05. The Jags also earned a relay win at the end of the meet in the 200 free relay. That relay team made up of Hirsbrunner, Luca McGee, Zietlow and Brandt earned a time of 1:35.52.
In the individual races for the women’s team, seniors Brandt and Zietlow led the team with three wins each while Hirsbrunner earned two. Brandt earned the top time in the 500 free (4;59.35), 200 free (1:52.71) and 200 IM (2:06.88). Zietlow swam the fastest time in the 50 free (23.84), 100 fly (56.68) and the 200 fly (2:04.38). Hirsbrunner took her two individual wins in the 50 fly (25.95) and the 400 IM (4:28.77).
Seven other Jags also earned top times for the women’s team. Samantha Lee won the 1000 free with a time of 10:33.39 while senior Malayna Mancinelli took first in the 50 back (27.21). Surdyka swam the top time in the 50 breast (29.49) and Ali Fitzgerald won the 100 breast (1:05.80). Kaylee Dexter earned the win in the other breast event in the 200 breast at 2:23.07. Tori Barnet swam a 59.32 to take the 100 back while Maddy Weber won the 100 free at 53.72.
The men’s team swept every event to earn the win and secure the undefeated season. Their two relay wins came in the 400 medley relay and the 200 free relay. Jack Gallob, Spencer Koehrn, Isaac Wilson and Nathan Rariden combined to win the 400 medley relay at 3:20.41. Rariden, David Niemiec, Luca Eckert and Hugo Arteaga won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:22.09.
The Jags recorded 16 individual wins with Zach Drotar totaling three individual wins and Arteaga, Rariden and Ben Kimmel each earning two.
Drotar led the Jags with three fast times. He swam the top time in the 400 IM (3:57.82), 100 breast (56.68) and 200 breast (2:01.34). Arteaga added two individual top times, winning the 50 fly (22.22) and 100 fly (49.12). Rariden won the 100 free (45.19) and the 200 free (1:40.48). Graduate student Kimmel recorded two wins with fast times in the 200 back (1:50.98) and the 200 IM (1:51.86).
Seven other Jags also recorded a top time during the meet. Gallob win the 50 back (23.18) while Koehrn took first in the 50 breast (26.76). Freshman Max Gerke earned the top time in the 50 free at 20.82 while fellow freshman Will Gorman won the 500 free (4:30.78). Youssef Magdy won the 1000 free with a top time of 9:25.84. Grayson Tidwell took first in the 100 back (49.72) and Wilson won the 200 fly (1:51.73).
Both the IU Indy men’s and women’s swim and dive teams will now turn their attention to the Horizon League Championships. The Championships are set for Feb. 19-22 in the IU Indy Natatorium.

The Butler swim team competed against IU Indy over the weekend, taking second place against the Jaguars in the meet held downtown. Senior Avery Piel received the team award for “Swimmer of the Meet” for her performance in the 100 Fly, where she earned her BIG EAST cut, by posting a season-best time.
“The IU Indianapolis team gave us some good races that allowed our swimmers to push themselves, and the results of this meet demonstrate just how much progress we’ve made since the beginning of the season,” Assistant Coach Hannah Cressman stated. “With plenty of lifetime and season-best times, our coaching staff was happy to see our swimmers benefiting from the detail and endurance work done in practice.”
400 Medley Relay
Butler’s A Relay team placed fourth in the 400 Medley with a time of 3:59.55. The backstroke was swam by Gianna Leffler (59.49), breastroke by Kate Schilling (1:05.77), fly by Ava Whittaker (59.29), and freestyle by Olivia Stotts (55.00).
1000 FR
Kayla Wright was the top BU swimmer in the even with a personal and team season-best time of 10:49.19.
50 Fly
Two Bulldogs swam well in the 50 Fly. Lauren Bergman earned second place and Ava Whittaker was close behind in third. The duo clocked times of 26.10 and 26.59 respectively.
50 Back
Gianna Leffler picked up a third place finish in the 50 back with a time of 28.34.
50 Free
Butler’s top finisher in the 50 Free was Olivia Stotts. She placed third with a time of 25.13.
400 IM
Sadie Brown and Caroline Zimner were active for Butler in the 400 IM. Brown placed third (4:38.25) and Zimer touched the wall at 4:38.69 for fourth.
100 Fly
Alani Hightower-Bend and Avery Piel represented the Bulldogs well in the 100 Fly. Hightower-Bend placed second in a time of 58.60 while Piel posted her season-best time at 1:00.81.
100 Breast
Lauren Bergman had a lifetime-best swim in the event clocking in at 1:09.10 for fourth place.
100 Free
Ava Whittaker took third place in this even with a time of 54.77.
500 Free
Kate Schilling had a personal-best time against the Jags, clocking in at 5:04.07 which led her to a second place finish.
200 Back
Olivia McKee won the 200 Back for the Bulldogs! Her season-best time was locked in at 2:08.75.
200 Breast
Lydia Eberlein and Caroline Zimner finished back-to-back in the event with Eberlein leading the duo in third place (2:31.25). Zimner posted a lifetime-best swim at 2:31.88.
200 Free Relay
Butler’s A Relay Team of Alani Hightower-Bend (24.67), Elizabeth Naylor (25.58), Caitlin Herring (25.29) and Olivia Stotts (24.64) placed third at the meet.

The Wabash College swimming and diving team took on the NCAA Division I program from Indiana University – Indianapolis on Saturday. The Little Giants turned on four top-three efforts in the meet, including a record-setting performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle in the 312-61 loss to the host Jaguars.
Wabash freshman Mason Gilliam shattered the school record in the 1,000 free, touching the wall for the final time in 9:29.98 to eclipse the old mark of 9:34.08 turned in by Chris Dombrowski in 2018. Gilliam’s time earned him a third-place finish in the event.
Eddie DaMata earned a pair of top-two finishes for the Little Giants. He placed second in the 50-yard backstroke, finishing with a season-best time of 27:24. DaMata also scored a second-place finish in the 100-yard breastroke by posting a season-best time of 59.85.
Brody Page earned a third-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly with a personal-best time of 23.10.
Wabash will now prepare for the 2025 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships at Denison University February 12-15.
