UMBC’s Boris Milev Breaks Michael Phelps Pool Record In Tri-Meet

BALTIMORE — The UMBC Women’s Swimming team went five-for-five in breaking UMBC Aquatic Complex pool records on Saturday afternoon in a non-scoring meet against Frostburg State and Mount St. Mary’s.

“Our pool has a long history filled with Olympic Champions and world record holders,” said head coach Matt Donovan. “To stand toe to toe with them today is a tremendous honor. This team is great at embracing challenges. Going ten for ten (overall) on pool relay records was a tall order and we did it. This was a total team effort. Every member of this team had a hand in our success today. I could not be more proud of this group. What an amazing day to be a Retriever!”

The first race of the day broke the first record of the day as Bruna de PaduaElze BielskuteNicol Davanzo and Ashley Gutshall won the 200 Medley Relay in 1:43.80, besting the previous mark of 1:45.30 set by UMBC in 2015.

Minutes later, de Padua, Nicole Lopez KohlmannMegan Gangaway and Claire Oettinger set the 800 Free Relay pool record in a time of 7:35.12 to beat the previous best of 7:37.92 set in 2005 by New Hampshire.

Gutshall, Lopez Kohlmann, Oettinger and Makaela Hill would then break the pool record in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:34.42. The mark was previously held by the 2005 New Hampshire team who finished in 1:36.32.

In the very next event, de Padua, Bielskute, Davanzo and Hill broke the 400 Medley Relay record with a time of 3:48.49, to beat the previous best of 3:50.00 set by UMBC in 2019.

The final record of the day was broken in the final event of the day as de Padua, Hill, Gutshall and Oettinger completed the 400 Free Relay in 3:24.83 to smash the previous pool best mark of 3:29.20 which was set by Navy in 2015.

UMBC has over a month off before taking on La Salle in Philadelphia on January 17th.

BALTIMORE — Boris Milev broke a 21-year-old pool record set by Michael Phelps as the UMBC Men’s Swimming team reset seven different pool records on Saturday against Frostburg State and Mount St. Mary’s.

Milev was the starter on the 400 Free Relay and his 100 time of 44.74 broke Phelps’ UMBC Aquatic Complex mark of 45.11 that had stood since 2003. Milev was joined in the relay by Sean NeilsChristian Coleman and Bode Neale to finish in a new pool record time of 3:00.23, to break the previous mark of 3:02.66 set by UMBC in 2020.

In the first race of the meet, the 200 Medley Relay team of Ryan Harding, Coleman, Oliver Gassmann and Neils won in 1:28.76 to best the previous mark of 1:30.40 set by UMBC in 2018.

Milev would again break a pool record when leading off a relay, as his starting 200 Free time in the 800 Free Relay of 1:38.31 reset the the top mark previously held by Ilya Rattsev’s 1:39.62 in 2020. Andrew McEachern, Neale and Marko Kovacic would follow Milev in the relay to set a new pool record time of 6:39.45, smashing the previous record of 6:44.84 set by UMBC in 2020.

Neils, Coleman, Gassmann and Neale would set a new pool record in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:21.93, previously held by UMBC in 2022 (1:22.98).

In the very next event, Kovacic, Coleman, Gassmann and Milev would then set a new pool record in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:18.60. The mark they beat was set by UMBC in 2020 with a time of. 3:21.64.

UMBC has over a month off before taking on La Salle in Philadelphia on January 17th.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Frostburg State Women’s Swimming team traveled to UMBC for a non-scoring competition on Saturday afternoon with the Retrievers and Mount St. Mary’s.

FSU secured a pair of runner-up finishes on the day, the first individually from sophomore Jayme Meadows in the 200-yard free (2:00.89) and the next in the 400 free relay (3:44.34), with the team of seniors Kendall Hooper and Lydia Nebiolo and freshmen Madison Hooper and Genna Rippeon.

The Bobcats also secured several podium finishes in the afternoon, with Madison Hooper leading the way on a couple third places in the 50 free (24.71) and the 50 breast (31.30). Rippeon had the same result in the 100 free (54.61), along with Kendall Hooper in the 100 IM (59.55). Rounding out the meet with yet another third place was freshman Taylor Emrich in the 100 fly (1:01.61).

Frostburg next will host Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, December 14 at 10 a.m., where it will be Senior Day for the Bobcats. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.

Sophomore Dylan King had a couple of great finishes, winning the 100-yard free in 48.14 before finishing runner-up in the 100 breast at 1:02.65, just ahead of graduate PJ Emrich with a 1:02.96. Senior Tave Chanthavong had the next-best finish for FSU, coming second in the 50-yard breast at 28.29, with junior Andrew Wetherhold in third at 28.79.

Among other podium finishes, senior Nate Canapp took third in the 200 free (1:49.52), the same placement as sophomore Abe Bias in the 100 free (49.03).

Frostburg next will host Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, December 14 at 10 a.m., where it will be Senior Day for the Bobcats. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
