PHOENIX – Air Force won 10 races to claim a team victory, 199-154, in a two-day meet with the Grand Canyon Lopes, November 8-9, in Fr Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center. Falcons claimed 30 finishes within the top three.
“The team really stepped up and raced/dove well over the last two days,” exclaimed head coach Colleen Murphy. “It was a great meet that allowed them to see the results of their hard work over the last few months, we are so excited to get a little rest as we head into our mid-season invitational.”
Hanani Dona and Ella Martin raced to first and second places, respectively, giving the Falcons their first win of the meet. Dona paced to a 4:27.80 top finish.
The Falcons were dominant in the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle. In the 500 free Air Force won first place through fifth behind Katie Andrist’s 4:59.86. Teammates Lily Larson, Lauren Arnold, Naomi Furman, and Brynn Bond swam to second through fifth, respectively. Andrist also swam to first place in the 1,000 free (10.14.55).
In the 200 free, Larson claimed the top spot with a 1:51.12, finishing ahead of teammates Kirsten Lee, Arnold, Ryan Mills, and Abby Turner who finished second through fifth, respectively.
Maeve Linscott swam to first place in the 200 backstroke, clocking a 2:18.52 in the effort. The 400 free relay team made up of Mills, Turner, Alex Clark, and Larson swam to first by a two-second margin (3:25.06) setting a GCU pool record.
Alex Cark and Kai-Min Tsuei rounded out the first-place finishers, winning the 200 IM (2:04.29) and 100 backstroke (56.57), respectively.
On the diving boards, freshman standout diver Chloe Perkins had success on the 3-meter dive, placing first with a 273.45, just ahead of teammate Annaliese Cundiff who placed second with a 255.98. On the 1-meter, Kacey Hu performed to top finish with a 262.35.
“This week has been stressful with the snowstorm and making it to this meet, but the team took advantage of a great opportunity to suit up and swim fast at sea level,” Murphy continued. “They were doing the little things right and we finished every race really strong, we won so many close finishes and showed that we are in great shape!”
Next up, the Falcon men’s and women’s teams will take a small break in action as they prepare for mid-season invitationals. The men’s team will travel to College Station, Texas, to compete at the Art Adamson Invitational, while the women’s team takes the fight to Houston, Texas, to compete at the Phil Hansel Invitational. Both meetings start Wednesday, November 20, and conclude on Friday, November 22.

The Falcons dominated five races by winning the top three finishes in those respective events. In the 400 IM, Camden Swigart (3:56.69) set a pool record by a three-second margin to claim first ahead of Ralph Fiscus and Evan Witte who finished second and third, respectively.
In the 200 breaststroke, senior co-team captain Tommy Nagle clocked 2:00.38 to finish first ahead of Tanner Wilson and Sebastian Anthony. Co-team captain James Winterfield led the charge in the 200 fly with a 1:47.59 ahead of teammates Danny Detjen and Evan Witte. In the 100 breaststroke, it was Nagle who claimed first again (54.96), pacing to first ahead of teammates Bridon Rosales and Mack Nuval. In the 200 free, Winterfield paced to first again, this time finishing ahead of teammates Joe Christ and Detjen.
Jacob Bulseco carried the momentum into the 100 freestyle, winning first with a 45.02. James Winterfield claimed first in the 200 backstroke and 100 butterfly with a 1:47.42 and 48.34, respectively.
Other first place finishes were Tyler Surratt in the 1,000 free (9:24.54) and Swigart in the 200 IM (1:52.02). Anthony Sebastion finished less than a second behind Swigart in the 200 IM.
On the 1-meter dive, Air Force standout Alex Kenyon placed second with 294.45, just ahead of third-place teammate Jack Roby who registered a 271.80. On the 3-meter, Brady Nichol finished best for AF, claiming third with a 291.45.

The Grand Canyon men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of two-day dual meets with Air Force at home this weekend.
In close battles on Friday and Saturday, the Lopes fell 199-154 on the women’s side and 186-167 in the men’s competition at Fr. Edward A. Reese Aquatic Complex.
The Lopes opened Friday with a win in the women’s 200-yard individual medley relay. The team, composed of sophomore Bailey Gott, graduate Raphaela Nakashima, junior Paula Martinez Moreno and senior Maria Brunlehner, went for a time of 1 minute 42.4 seconds.
Nakashima went on to win the 100 breaststroke, touching first at 1:02.58.
The GCU men’s medley team also was victorious with a time of 1:28.88 behind juniors Alex Volkov and Mario Perez as well as graduate Harper Houk and sophomore Jasu Ovaskainen.
Perez also picked up a win in the 50 freestyle, going 20.57 seconds.
Burnlehner took the first individual race for GCU with a time of 51.13 seconds in the 100 freestyle. The 50 freestyle was a similar story for the Kenyan when she swam it in 23.06 for first place.
Spaniards Martinez Moreno (1:59.83) and Marta Guasp (2:02.94) went first and second in the 200 backstroke.
Martinez Moreno also won the 100 butterfly (54.46) and 200 butterfly (2:02.39).
Freshman Batu Servi (4:30.83) and Easton Mousser (4:31.06) finished one-two in the 500 freestyle.
Between the end of Friday and start of Saturday, GCU picked up three relay victories, touching first in the men’s 400 freestyle relay (2:59.81), women’s 400 medley relay (3:44.00) and men’s 400 medley relay (3:15.48).
The Lopes snagged the top three spots in the 100 backstroke with Alex Volkov (48.63), junior Daniel Volkov (50.09) and senior Sam Jennings (50.19).
In diving, freshman Omar Elsayed placed first in the competitions at 1 meter (307.50 points) and 3 meters (376.88).
GCU will taper next week before heading to the Purdue Invitational for the Nov. 21-23 midseason meet in West Lafayette, Indiana.
