Americans Wins 25 of 26 Events In Dual Meet At Catholic

WASHINGTON – With wins in 25 of 26 events, the American University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams dominated the competition in a dual meet at Catholic University on Friday. Four on the women’s side were two-time individual winners, while two on the men’s side also won two individual events each.

Notable Women’s Results 

  • Sophomore Kate Williams, junior Isabel McGovern, junior Peyton Thurman and senior Katie Yoo all won two events each for American, with McGovern adding a relay win as well.
  • The 200 medley relay team of freshmen Piper CrosbyMarin Priddy and Grace Gilbert, along with McGovern, started off the meet with a win in 1:49.90. The Eagles also took second place thanks to the foursome of senior Laura Laux and juniors Grace NetzGabby Kaczorowski and Dylan Moulton.
  • Williams and freshman Hailey Rees took first and second in the 1,000 freestyle, with Williams finishing in 10:48.60.
  • Later in the meet, Williams won again in the 500 free (5:19.79) with freshmen Claire Mosher and Mallorie Jeremiah taking second and third.
  • Yoo was a winner in both the 200 IM and the 100 free. She went 2:14.44 in the 200 IM, followed by freshman Brooke Vos in second. In the 100 free, Crosby finished behind Yoo in second place.
  • The two individual wins for McGovern came in the 50 free (24.93) and 100 fly (58.37). Behind her in the 100 fly were junior Veronica Lester and sophomore Jordan Carpentieri in second and third. In the 50 free, Moulton took second and Priddy placed third.
  • Both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events were won by Thurman (236.4 on the 1-meter, 235.1 on the 3-meter), with junior Maggie Fanning taking second in both. Fanning’s score of 210.15 is a new personal best that moves her up to 12th all-time at AU.
  • Freshman Demetra Bicos, Gilbert, and Jeremiah finished 1-2-3 in the 200 freestyle, with Bicos going 1:58.52.
  • Senior Amaya Tomma won the 100 backstroke, while Kaczorowski took second.
  • The women concluded the day with a 200 free relay win in 1:40.25 by the foursome of Priddy, Moulton, Gilbert, and Laux.
  • The final score had AU beating Catholic 184-53.

Men’s Notable Results

  • Freshmen Luke Martens and Zachary Rothman both earned two individual wins each, while senior Aidan Delehanty, junior Colin Clough and sophomore Connor Florence were all on two winning relay teams.
  • The foursome of Delehanty, Clough, junior Daniel Coughlin and Florence won the 200 medley relay in 1:36.96.
  • To cap the meet, Florence, freshman Charlie St. Louis, Delehanty, and Clough teamed up for a win in the 200 free relay in 1:29.03.
  • Rothman and sophomore Brent Hinckley went 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle, with Rothman going 9:53.59 for the win. He later went 4:50.61 to win the 500 free, followed again by Hinckley in second place.
  • Martens was a winner in both the 200 IM and the 100 free. He went 2:00.33 to take first in the 200 IM, followed by freshman Ryan Pursley in second. Martens finished in 49.07 to win the 100 free, while St. Louis took second place.
  • Coughlin got an individual win in the 100 fly for the second time this season, going 52.79.
  • St. Louis was an individual winner in the 50 free with his time of 21.91.
  • The Eagles got a win from sophomore Lucas Standridge in the 200 free (1:47.35), and an individual win by Clough in the 100 breaststroke (58.90).
  • Delehanty was a winner in the 100 back as the Eagles went 1-2-3 with Pursley in second place and sophomore Henry Bysshe in third.
  • Freshmen Sean Memon and Gray Miller each got a win and a runner-up finish in diving. Memon placed first on the 1-meter (257.7), while Gray took the win on the 3-meter (276.2).
  • Memon’s 1-meter score places him sixth all-time on AU’s top 16 list, while Miller’s score of 243.67 is also a new personal best and has him in eighth all-time.
  • On the 3-meter, Miller’s score was short of his best from September, but Memon’s second-place score of 226.27 is a new best that puts him in 13th all-time.
  • In the final team scoring, the Eagles beat Catholic 176-61.

Next Up

  • After competing in three duals over the last eight days, the Eagles will take a two-week break and resume competition when they host Howard at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Bella Mugno posted an individual win to highlight Catholic women’s swimming and diving dual meet against America on Friday afternoon at the Dufour Center Pool. The Cardinals fell to the Eagles, 53-184.

Mungo finished first in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:10.95. She beat out her next closest competitor by nearly a second to pick up her second straight victory in this event to start the season.

The Cardinals opened the day by taking third in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:54.94 with a team consisting of Tara WiardaMugno, Emily Albans, and Izzy Giannetto.

Individually, Albans placed third in the 100 Free with a time of 56.47. Wiarda also earned a third place finish in the 100 Back with a time of 1:03.14. Molly Foltz touched third in the 1000 Free with a time of 11:12.44, just missing her time from last week. Madison Gozdan placed clocked a 2:17.62 in the 200 IM finishing within the top three. She also placed fourth in the 100 Breast, finishing in 1:12.72.

On the 1-meter diving board, Margaret O’Brien scored a 75.20 for third place. Jordan Hewitt followed with a 72.05 for fourth and Annie Munn placed fourth with a score of 57.80.

Catholic rounded out the meet with a second place finishing in the 200 Free Relay. Giannetto, Grace Kelly, Wiarda, and Albans posted a 1:45.89 to just out-touched the America team who finished third.

The Cardinals travel to Scranton, Pa. next weekend for a Saturday meet against the Royals. The Landmark Conference match up is set to start at 1 p.m.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic men’s swimming and diving team ran into a tough American squad on Friday afternoon, dropping its second dual meet of the season to the Eagles, 61-176.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals saw several solid performances across the board. Catholic started the meet with a second place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Teddy TsakumisJackson HicksVincent Wills and James Caldwell clocked a time of 1:38.24 to slot in between the two American squads.

Wills continued his day with the a time of 53.75 in the 100 Fly. He out-touched his competitor by .03 seconds to take second. Hicks also swam an individual event, clocking a 1:00.87 in the100 Breast for second. Caldwell continued to perform well in freestyle events alongside teammate Jack Thompson. The duo finished two-three in the 50 Free with Caldwell posting a 22.28 while Thompson came in just after with a 22.33. Caldwell also competed in the 100 Free, touching the wall in 50.24 seconds to pick up a third-place finish.

Sean Kelty took third in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:32.71. He also placed fourth in the 200 IM, beating his time for last week by over four seconds. Benjamin Lutcher finished just ahead of Kelty in the IM with a time of 2:04.72.

John Holler placed second in the 200 free, clocking a time of 1:47.67 to  beat out his time from last week. He kept pace with American’s Lucas Standridge for most of the race and both swimmers made the final turn in sync but Standridge just out-touched Holler at the finish to snag the victory. Holler also took third in the 500 Free with another season best time of 4:59.31.

Charles Connolly III was the sole diver for the Cardinals on the day. He scored a 120.30 to take third from the 1-meter board. The junior followed this performance with another third place score of 97.30 from the 3-meter.

The Cardinals finished the meet like they started it, this time coming in second in the 200 Free Relay. Thompson, Holler, Wills and Caldwell posted a time of 1:29.53.

Catholic with return to Landmark Conference competition next week at they travel to take on Scranton. The dual meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
