Mollie O’Callaghan’s Gold Moves Australia To Top Of Medal Table Once Again

2024 PARIS SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES

Australia led through day 1 of the medal table but then fell to second after winning zero medals last night. They now re-take the lead with three gold medals after Mollie O’Callaghan led a 1-2 finish with Ariarne Titmus in the women’s 200 freestyle.

Still, the Australian and US rivalry is alive and well as the US leads the total medals table with 11 total medals. The US led after night 2 but came up short of gold on night 3, instead adding one silver and three bronze tonight.

South Africa’s Tatjana Smith captured the first medal for the country winning gold in the women’s 100 breast. Romania also enters the medal table for the first time after David Popovici‘s gold in the men’s 200 free.

Perhaps the biggest surprise through night 3 is China who has yet to win a gold medal. In addition, the country only had two golds on all of day three which was a disappointment on the day.

I think seeing a point system for gold vs silver vs bronze to have a total seems like a good way to decide.

You can use whatever point system you like. SwimSwam is using the actual medal table published by the IOC and World Aquatics

To determine which team is leading we convert the medals into points, like NCAA’s and age group championships around the world
Assuming 20 pts for Gold, 16pts for silver, 14 for bronze.
Australia has 108pts
USA. 164pts.
Team USA is ahead by every metric

No. Australia is ahead by the metric of the actual medal table used by the two organisations that run this event and every country that participates

Huge respect for both the Aussie and American athletes who are putting the crap that Campbell, the Aussie and American media has caused and focusing on where the results matter which is in the pool. May the best country be on top by the end 🤝

Campbell didn’t cause anything. Ridiculous losers who clutched their pearls caused everything.

She didn’t need to insult the anthem which she herself has said she regrets everything else she said was fine but now every time she does an interview Aussie media is constantly trying to egg her on to take another dig which thankfully she isn’t she knows that it’s getting taken too far

Lol…I think the Aussies have taken over swimswam. 6 can never be more than 11. Never has, never will. USA is TOP of medal table.
Australia has one more gold than USA, but USA clearly has the MOST medals.

By anyone who realises that they give the gold medal to the person who finishes first. Whether you it or not, there is a difference between finishing first and finishing second. That’s the essence of competitive sport – there is a winner.

No one disputes the importance of a gold medal. How ever, there is a reason silver and bronze medals are awarded. Gold+Silver+Bronze = TOTAL MEDALS.
It’s simple math.

Gold > Silver > Bronze

It’s simple logic.

And by your logic, 6>11.?

So if Australia had 1 gold and nothing else but US had 0 golds, 12 silver and 10 bronze then Australia “wins”?

If the total medals were fairly close then more golds would prevail

I’ll give Australia credit, their too end talent is swimming much better than ours, but the overall depth of the USA team is much better from top to bottom

Both teams are great, in different waves

I remember a few years back the Texas won NCAA’s with just one or two individual winner. (Or maybe none?)

Let’s also let the rest of the meet play out

That’s right. One gold is better than 12 silvers. You can’t be the best if you don’t win a single event.

Australia won’t win the most golds anyway so it’s a moot point but the medal table has ALWAYS been sorted by golds first by literally everyone in the world except USA.

And no-one is disputing that the US has won more total medals. But gold medals are intrinsically worth more (because they are only given to the winner). So, if you are ordering the table by total medals you are implicitly saying that a bronze is equal to a gold, which it clearly isn’t.

I’m merely saying we have more medals than Australia so we sit atop the medal table.NBC has the the real medal table.

NBC has the real medal table. World Aquatics and the IOC have the “wrong” medal table?

Has USA purchased the right to decide the medal table now? Just setting the Olympic schedule wasn’t enough?

Are you talking about the same World Aquatics that is allowing drug cheats to compete? No integrity there buddy.

At least we’re winning olympic medals, unlike the Aussie team. You bring 52 athletes and you only have 6 medals to show for it through 3 days.
