Popovici, Schoenmaker Among Athletes Not Racing In Doha

2024 WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

  • February 11th – February 18th (pool swimming)
  • Doha, Qatar
  • LCM (50m)
  • Meet Central

While we’re still anticipating the unveiling of the actual entries per event for next month’s World Aquatics Championships, the sport’s governing body’s website reveals the entered athletes per nation for the Doha, Qatar competition.

We’ll be combing through the entries and comparing them to already-published rosters, pointing out who potentially is missing and who has been added now that the pre-Paris 2024 elite meet is just days away.

Right off the bat, we noticed that the Romanian roster is missing World Record holder David Popovici.

The 19-year-old speedster was a question mark about racing in Doha but it now appears he will not try to upgrade his 6th place finish in the 100m freestyle from Fukuoka.

On the women’s side, two-time medalist from Fukuoka Tatjana Schoenmaker no longer seems to be racing for South Africa next month.

Schoenmaker was originally named to the 16-strong South African lineup for Doha but is missing from the list appearing on World Aquatics’ website. And she’s not the only one in that same situation. Emma Chelius, Kaylene Corbett and Rebecca Meder were also originally expected to race for RSA but are absent from the cluster of entered athletes.

Look for additional posts with insights as we await the official psych sheets.

Surprised to see Shayna doing the individual 200.

Jenna Forrester and Abbey Connor were announced as part of the roster but are missing from the entries

Agreed. Obviously my check earlier wasn’t very thorough lol.

However, depending on who is there she might be able to medal with a 1:55 low-mid

Although this is shaping up to be a sub-par world championships when it comes to the level of competition, it might end up being the most difficult Pick ‘Em contest we’ve ever had. In some people’s eyes swimmers might have an asterisk next to their wins, but the Pick ‘em winners should get an exclamation point on theirs.

Tatiana Schoenmaker is current world and Olympic champion. Saying she’s two time medalist from Fukuoka doesn’t do her justice.

It appears that you can see specific entries on the website now, but in the clunky format and not a convenient list or pdf: https://www.worldaquatics.com/competitions/2969/world-aquatics-championships-doha-2024/results?discipline=SW&disciplines=&event=214d920a-b1b2-44a8-89fb-9a7af2fb0427

No major eyebrow raises that I can see from my very brief review. I notice Aus and USA are entered in every relay but can’t imagine they’ll swim them all. Also Throssell is skipping the 200 fly but swimming the 200 free so seems like her goal is just to do the relay in Paris.

Also Cooper going full MA and swimming only 3 x 50s.

Should be enough info there now to get prediction articles (although a lot of them will just be saying there is only e competitive entry in the event and they’ll clear easily)

Cooper going full MA and refuse to train for 100 will bite him in the ass if he doesn’t qualify for Paris.

He already said months ago that he isn’t targeting the 100s for Doha but would be for Paris.

He’s said he’s doing the 100 back at trials. But yeah, since he doesn’t do free he better hope he hits top 2 and QT in either 50 free or 100 back.

Strong possibility he misses both, but if his 50 free keeps improving he could medal

He’s doing the 100 free at trials as well.

I didn’t know that. But also he has 0 chance of top 6 in that.
