TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State opened the 2023-24 season with a statement win on Friday evening as the Sycamores topped host Milwaukee at the Klotsche Natatorium, 225.5-74.5.
The Sycamores took wins in 15 of the 16 events held on in the season opener with Chloe Farro (50- and 100-Free), Zoe Smith (1M and 3M Diving), and Claire Parsons (500- and 1000-Free) sweeping their respective events. Both Smith and Bailey Betzer hit NCAA Zone qualifying standards in the season opener in the 1M diving event.
“We did well handling a long travel day today,” head coach Josh Christensen said. “First meet of the season, so lots of things we need to improve on from here, but also plenty of highlights and very strong swims and performances on the boards. We had event wins from every class, freshmen to seniors, so that says a lot about the strength of our team early in the year.”
The Sycamores started off the day with three of the top four finishes in the 200-yard Medley Relay. The quartet of Kalli Agapios, Kaimi Matsumoto, Raine Boles, and Chloe Farro were first to the wall in 1:46.44, while Trista Bullock, Ali Pearson, Alexandria Cotter, and Alexa Szadorski finished second in 1:47.99. Kate Reeves, Peyton Heagy, Kaleigh Kelley, and Allie Barasch finished fourth in 1:48.59, with the final team of Raz Harel, Dorotea Bukvic, Becca Shaffer, and Ash Saple finishing sixth in 1:51.05.
ISU followed up taking the top three spots in the 1000-yard Freestyle with freshman Claire Parsons touching the wall first in 10:20.41. Rose Parsons (10:39.47, 2nd) and Esther Rydbeck Norden (10:48.34, 3rd) rounded out the Sycamores in the event.
Peyton Heagy out-touched Milwaukee’s Janelle Schulz to win the 200-yard Freestyle as the Sycamore sophomore finished in 1:53.76 to take the event win. Erin Cummins (1:55.79) finished third for ISU, while Jordan Gruce (1:58.10, 5th), Bullock (2:00.38, 6th), and Saple (2:01.81, 8th) rounded out the field.
Kalli Agapios picked up her first win of the fall in the 100-yard Backstroke touching the wall in 58.73 to win by .33 seconds. Reeves finished third overall in 59.22, while Barasch (59.86, 5th) and Olivia DiRuzza (1:00.55, 6th) were in the top six.
The Sycamores swept the podium in the 100-yard Breaststroke with Pearson topping the field in 1.58 after touching in 1:05.10. Matsumoto finished second in 1:06.68, while Bukvic finished third in 1:09.24.
Three Sycamores finished in the top four in the 200-yard Butterfly paced by Haley Halsall’s three-second win in 2:05.99. Cotter finished second in 2:08.99, while Harel was fourth in 2:13.20.
Farro and Kelley went 1-2 in the 50-yard Freestyle with Farro touching the wall in 23.95 to take the win. Kelley finished second in 24.26, while Szadorski was fifth in 25.01. Boles finished seventh in 25.21 and Becca Shaffer finished in 26.08.
Smith paced the field in the 3M Diving event with a score of 262.20, while Betzer was third in 243.98. Daniela Orta Castaneda placed fourth in 231.68 with Sierra Bowman (213.08, 6th) and Brenna Woodruff (140.18, 8th) rounded out the group on the board.
Farro, Heagy, and Barasch finished in the top three in the 100-yard Freestyle and Szadorski finished fifth in the field as ISU took four of the top five positions in the event. Farro touched in 51.95, while Heagy (53.21) and Barasch (53.90) both scored in the field. Szadorski touched in 54.36, while Gruce (54.87) and Saple (55.41) also took on the field.
Reeves was ISU’s top finisher in the 200-yard Backstroke, while DiRuzza and Agapios were also in the top four in the field. The Sycamore freshman touched the wall in 2:06.45, while DiRuzza touched in 2:09.15 and Agapios reached in 2:10.04. Bullock (2:16.03) and Rose Parsons (2:17.35) also took on the field.
Bukvic was first in the field in the 200-yard Breaststroke touching the wall in 2:21.79, while Pearson was second in 2:22.22. Matsumoto finished sixth overall in 2:31.19 and Kam Nowak touched eighth in 2:34.88.
Claire Parsons picked up her second win of the day in the 500-yard Freestyle finishing in 5:06.20. Halsall was second in 5:10.14, while Cummins (5:16.79, 3rd) and Rydbeck Norden (5:18.45, 4th) rounded out the top four.
Kelley and Cotter went 1-2 in the 100-yard Fly as the Sycamore freshman claimed the win in 57.05. Cotter was second in 58.36, while Boles (58.77, 5th) and Harel (59.18, 6th) rounded out the ISU athletes.
Smith topped the field in the 3M Diving event with a score 278.93 to finish first overall. Betzer was third in 266.40, while Orta Castaneda (222.90, 4th), Bowman (206.78, 7th), and Woodruff (131.33, 8th) rounded out the field.
Cotter picked up her first win of the day in the 200-yard IM finishing in 2:07.22 to win by 1.64. Bukvic was second overall in 2:08.98, while DiRuzza (2:16.21, 6th) and Shaffer (2:19.87) wrapped up the Sycamores in the field.
ISU took the top two spots in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay with the team of Matsumoto-Farro-Barasch-Szadorski taking the win in 3:31.46. Kelley, Cummings, Claire Parsons, and Heagy finished second in 3:34.54, while the quartet of Agapios, Boles, Gruce, and Pearson finished fifth in 3:40.09. The final group of Halsall, Rydbeck Norden, Rose parsons, and Saple finished seventh overall in 3:46.01.

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women’s swimming & diving team opened their season by hosting Indiana State today in an afternoon matchup at the Klotsche Natatorium.
The Panthers fell to the Sycamores by a final score of 225.5 to 74.5.
“It’s good to get this first one out of the way and have a really fast competition with Indiana State,” head coach Kyle Clements said. “With twenty new people on our team, we’re just starting to get into the racing part of our season, so today was actually the first day that we swam a lot of events.”
Skylar Ruggles highlighted Milwaukee’s efforts on the afternoon, grabbing a first-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:05.77. Ruggles also recorded a third-place finish in the 100 back with a time of 59.22.
The day started with the Panthers finishing third in the 200 medley relay, recording a time of 1:48.29. Shortly after that was the 200 freestyle, where Janelle Schulz finished second with a time of 1:53.93.
Carly Plate finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.06, and Erika Thomas finished third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.21. Nhia Caras recorded a 50 free time of 24.79, good enough for third, and Julie Rebek finished second in both 3 meter and 1 meter diving.
Schulz picked up another top three placing with a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, while Thomas took third in the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM. In the final event of the day, Milwaukee’s 400 freestyle relay team placed third.
“It’s a good jumping off point, now we kind of know where we’re at,” Clements added. “We’re looking forward to seeing where this goes as an evolution throughout the season. With the Wisconsin Showcase coming up and then the UIC and IUPUI, I think we’ll look back on today as a good starting point.”
“We have a long way to go but we have a lot of time to do it, so I’m really proud of the team today.”
After tomorrow’s alumni meet, the Panthers will compete at the Wisconsin Showcase on October 21st.
