Seton Hall Opens Season With Sweep of Rider

Lawrenceville, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s swimming and diving team opened its season with a victory at Rider by a score of 186-100. Silvia Alessio (Trieste, Italy)Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.), and Julie Stampe (Allerod-Birkerod, Denmark) each picked up multiple individual victories on the afternoon.

The dual meet opened with the Pirates taking the top two spots in the 200 Medley Relay. Stampe swam the opening leg followed by Yosun Hacifazioglu (Istanbul, Turkey)Josie McCartney (Verona, Wisc.) and Lea Moeller (New Lenox, Ill.) to capture the win.

Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) followed with a victory on the 1000 Free, touching the wall in a time of 10:21.55. Waggoner would later finish second in the 500 Free, a race which saw the Pirates sweep the top three spots. Waggoner was sandwiched between Amanda Zajdzinski (Mesa, Ariz.) in first place and Madeleine Bachand (Raleigh, N.C.) in third.

Heim picked up the first of her two wins in the 200 Free, finishing with a time of 1:54.36. The senior finished just ahead of Zajdzinski, who took second in 1:55.42. Heim would also take the victory in the 100 Free later in the day as the Pirates would once again sweep the top three spots. Heim claimed the win in 52.35, followed by Moeller in second and Leiya Istambouli (Danbury, Conn.) in third.

Moeller would claim victory in a freestyle event on the day, touching the wall first in the 50 Free. Moeller clocked a time of 24.46 to take the win, just ahead of McCartney in second place.

Stampe would sweep the backstroke events on Saturday, first claiming victory in the 100 Back with a time of 58.68. Stampe would go on to win the 200 Back later in the day with a time of 2:07.38. Both races saw MADI FIELD take second place just behind Stampe.

Alessio swept the diving events in her first meet as a Pirate. The Fresno State transfer posted a score of 299.10 to take the 3-meter diving, another event which saw the Pirates sweep the top three. Laura Stavila (Oakland, Calif.) and Nicolette Pawar (Lawrenceville, N.J.) took second and third, respectively, in the event. Alessio would later take her second win of the day with a score of 272.48 in the 1-meter, with Stavila claiming third in the event. Alessio’s scores qualified her for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships later this season.

The Pirates return to action on Oct. 21 as they travel to Lewisburg, Pa, to compete in the Bucknell Fall Invite.

Lawrenceville, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s swimming and diving team kicked off its season with a victory over Rider on Saturday afternoon by a score of 178.5-119.5. Kevin Cary (West Chester, Pa.)Justen Lopez (Levittown, N.Y.)Michael Klimaszewski (London, England) and Quinn Murtha (Cumming, Ga.) each picked up multiple individual victories on the afternoon, while the 400 Medley Relay team set the pool record en route to a first place finish.

Klimaszewski, fresh off winning four BIG EAST titles at February’s BIG EAST Championships, started his season with a bang. The sophomore swept the Butterfly events, first taking the 200 Fly with a time of 1:53.16. Klimaszewski later touched the wall first in the 100 Fly in 49.86. He along with Cary added a third win on the day in the 400 Free Relay to wrap up the dual meet.

Cary’s two wins came in Freestyle events, first in the 200 Free which saw him clock a time of 1:41.32. The sophomore would later add a win in the 100 Free, posting a time of 46.05.

Lopez picked up wins in the 100 Breast and 200 Breast on the afternoon. The graduate student recorded a time of 57.60 in the former to notch the win before finishing in 2:10.28 in the latter for his second victory.

Murtha, the reigning BIG EAST Champion in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive, picked up victories in each event to begin his season. The junior posted a score of 278.48 in the 1-meter to finish just ahead of teammate Trevor Post (Bay City,Mich.) in second. Murtha would later put up a score of 285.83 in the 3-meter dive for his second win of the day.

Three other Pirates also picked up individual wins on the afternoon. Sean Vizzard (Mount Laurel, N.J.) opened the meet with a win in the 1000 Free in 9:36.64, just ahead of second-place Clil Halevi (Kafar Hadranim, Israel). The two would trade places in the 500 Free later in the meet, with Halevi picking up the victory and Vizzard taking second. Toma Adam (Bacau, Romania) picked up a win in the 50 Free in his first collegiate meet with a time of 21.25.

The 400 Medley Relay team capped off the meet by setting the pool record in their victory. The quartet of Klimaszewski, Adam, Gideon Langenbusch (Oberhausen, Germany) and Cary combined to finish with a time of 3:06.04.

The Pirates return to action on Oct. 21 as they travel to Lewisburg, Pa, to compete in the Bucknell Fall Invite.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2023-24 season with a 186-100 dual-meet loss to Seton Hall Saturday afternoon.

The Bronc women won four events in the meet.

Hannah Yemec won both 200-fly and 100-fly in her first career meet, posting times of 2:12.11 and 58.41, respectively.

In the 200-IM, Casey McLaughlin (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) led a one-two-three finish for the Broncs. She posted a time of 2:17.94. She was followed by Lea Opdyke (Ocala, FL/West Port) in 2:21.50 and Suriya Pathammavong (Rochester, NY/Churchville Chili) in 2:22.14.

The 400-free relay team of Chastity RuatosMallory Mead (Middle River, MD/Dulaney[Oklahoma Christian]), Paola Carlesso (Caracas, Venezuela/The New School Medellin[Colegio Simon Bolivar]), and Connar Melcher (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) swam 3:44.26 to earn the victory to close out the meet.

– Opdyke took third in the 200-free.
– Ruatos finished third in the 100-back.
– Sarah Fondacaro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) took second and Pathammavong finished third in the 100-breast. Fondacaro later took third in the 50-free.
– Mead touched the wall third in the 200-back.
– Alexa Torres (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) was third in the 100-fly.
– On the 1-meter, Maiti O’Connor earned second place.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Despite a record setting performance, the Rider University men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2023-24 season with a 178.5-119.5 dual-meet setback against Seton Hall Saturday afternoon.

The Bronc men won five events in the meet.

Rider started fast, with the Broncs opening the day with a win in the 200-medley relay by the team of Lucas Racevicius (Watertown, CT/Holy Cross), Billy Ruddy (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny Regional), Nicholas Lane (Hackettstown, NJ/Lane Academy), and Bobby Irwin (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East). The group set a Coppola Pool record, touching the wall in 1:31.55.

Lane led a one-two finish ahead of Christian Overton in the 100-back. The pair stopped the clock at 50.94 and 51.26. Overton would go on to win the 200-back with a time of 1:52.02.

David Rucci’s (Sewell, NJ/Gateway Regional) later swam one-two with Overton in the 200-IM. The pair touched the wall at 1:58.23 and 2:00.39.

NOTES & QUOTES
– Seton Hall now leads the all-time series 16-15.
– Ethan Rogowski (Waterford, NY/Shenendehowa) took third in the 1,000-free and 500-free.
– Racevicius and Matt Lequang (Plainsboro, NJ/Notre Dame) finished two-three in the 200-free.
– Ruddy and Max Connelly took second and third in the 100-breast. Connelly then took second in the 200-breast.
– Irwin claimed third in both the 200-fly and 100-fly with Lane adding a second-place finish in the 100-fly.
– Racevicius was second in the 50-free and the 100-free.
– Rucci claimed third in the 200-back.
– Marcas Racevicius (Watertown, CT/Holy Cross) took third in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter.
