UMass Sweeps Colgate Invite As Host Raiders Place 2nd

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team combined for 2,022 points to claim first at the Justin Jennings Invitational, hosted by Colgate, at the Lineberry Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The women’s team earned the team scoring title with a score of 923, while the men’s team secured first with 1,099 points.

Three In A Row At Colgate
The Minutewomen’s victory marked the third consecutive win at the invitational.

In total, swimming and diving won 10 individual events on the final day of competition and added 17 top-three marks.

Podium Sweep
The Minutemen swept the podium in the 500 free, led by Wilson Dubois’ winning time of 4:49.59. Emerson Kiefer followed as runner-up with a time of 4:54.42, while Jude Boukarroum took third, finishing with a time of 4:54.71.

Fast Freshmen
Freshmen Beren Cakiroglu and Lindsay Burbage posted the top times in the 100 free and the 200 breaststroke, respectively, for the Minutewomen. Cakiroglu swam a time of 53.33 in 100 free, while Burbage completed the 200 breaststroke with a time 2:27.76.

Additionally, Diya Ackerman-Vallala competed in the 500 free, posting a third-place finish with a time of 5:17.02, as Burbage earned third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.33.

For the Minutemen, Boukarroum’s recorded time of 4:54.71 in the 500 free aided him to a third-place finish.

Diving In
Sophomore Salem Howes sat atop the podium in the 1-meter dive on day one of the competition, totaling a score of 26.45. On the final day of the invitational, she earned a score of 207.35 in the 3-meter dive to take first.

Top Finishes
Senior Sam Haddad won two individual events on day two of the Justin Jennings Invitational, finishing the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.31 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.10. Sophomore Sammy Quigg took first in the 100 free with a time of 45.25, while Dubois recorded a time of 4:49.59 in the 500 free. Senior Juan Montori took the top spot in the 100 fly with a time of 51.06

For the Minutewomen, Cakiroglu earned first with her time of 53.33 in the 100 free, as senior Bri Williams finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:06.23. Burbage had a time of 2:27.76 in the 200 breaststroke to win the event, as senior Summer Pierce finished with a time of 57.01 in the 100 fly.

Next Up
Both the men’s and women’s swim team will return to the pool for the NJIT Invite in Newark, New Jersey, on Friday, October 13 through Saturday, October 14. The meet will be swim only, with Friday’s events kicking off at 5 p.m., while Saturday’s events begin at 10 a.m.

HAMILTON – Colgate’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams capped off the season-opening Colgate Invite with five victories Saturday at Lineberry Natatorium. 

MG King picked up her second win in as many days in the women’s 500-yard freestyle after clocking in with a time of 5:10.36, nearly two seconds faster than the second-place swimmer. 

JD Suarez capped off a strong opening weekend with a victory in the men’s 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:53.84 to earn first-place honors. Suarez also paced the Raiders in the 100-yard fly with a second-place time of 52.69 seconds. 

For the second consecutive day, Owen McCabe secured first place in the 1-meter dive, this time with 228.15 points to edge out two competitors from Le Moyne. Ellie Sundin (205.70) and Fabiana Codella (204.45) finished second and third, respectively, in the women’s 3-meter dive.

Audrey Collins secured her first win of the campaign in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.86, besting the second-place finisher from UMass by nearly one second. 

Colgate’s 400-yard free relay team of Jordan HurtBrooke GarretsonElizabeth Rainey, and Lucy Art captured first place with a time of 3:35.49. The Raiders’ quartet won a close race, with second-place UMass’ relay team finishing up at 3:35.69. 

Gavin Perez paced three Raiders in the top five in the 200-yard individual medley with a second-place time of 2:03.17. Andrew Mazzacano and Matthew Szypula placed third and fifth, respectively. 

Colgate’s women took second place as a team with 889 points, besting St. Francis and Le Moyne while finishing just behind UMass’ first-place total of 923. The men’s team finished second of three teams with a final score of 915 points, behind only UMass’ 1,099 total.
