Yu Yiting Hits 2:08.34 200 IM As China’s 3rd Fastest Woman In History

Day two of the 2023 Chinese Nationals brought a big-time swim from Qin Haiyang in the men’s 100m breaststroke.

The 23-year-old ripped a time of 57.93 to take the event in a new Chinese national and Asian continental record, becoming just the 3rd man ever to delve into 57-second territory in the process. Qin now ranks #1 in the world on the season, overtaking Belarus’ Ilya Shymanovich and his previous world-leading mark of 58.41.

Xu Jiayu‘s backstroke continues to look on-form, as the winner of last night’s 100m back doubled up with gold in the 50m back sprint this evening.

The Olympic medalist put up a time of 24.54 to get to the wall first, beating out runners-up Wang Gukailai and Wang Yutian. The former snagged silver in 25.08 while the latter bagged bronze in 25.23.

Xu now ranks as the 7th fastest swimmer in the world this season.

Wan Letian logged a winning result of 27.51 to top the women’s 50m back podium. That got the edge over Wang Xueer who settled for silver in 27.62 while Chen Jie also got on the podium in 27.70 as the bronze medalist.

Wan takes over slot #5 in the season’s world rankings with her performance.

Notching the sole time of the field under 2:10, Yu Yiting got it done for gold in the women’s 200m IM.

Yu earned a time of 2:08.34, her fastest of the season, to top the podium and become China’s 3rd fastest woman in history and the quickest since Ye Shiwen‘s gold medal-winning time of 2:07.57 from the 2012 Olympic Games.

Additional Day 2 Notes

  • Wang Changhao clocked a time of 22.01 to take the men’s 50m free, getting the gold ahead of last night’s 100m free national record-setter Pan Zhanle. Pan touched in 22.08 for silver in this shorter race while Shen Jiahao earned bronze in 22.38.
  • Li Bingjie added another gold to her haul, topping the women’s 200m free this evening. She registered a winning result of 1:55.62 to handily defeat the field. Li Jiaping was the next-closest swimmer in 1:56.92, beating 3rd place finisher Ai Yanhan by just .02. As for 21-year-old Li, she becomes the 8th swiftest performer in the world this season, as her time sliced .25 off her previous career-best effort.

3 women faster than the gold medal time in Tokyo and 4 faster than the silver so far this season, and that’s not even including any of the American women yet wow

Why doesn’t it include any Americans? They’ve already swum LC.

because the list of the 4 women faster than the silver medalling time doesn’t include any of the Americans? So once US trials comes, there’ll be 5, maybe 6, who are faster than a 2:08.5
